I came here expecting a history lesson on President Lincoln, but since it was his sons home it really was focused on his achievements and family history. The grounds are beautifully kept, the staff was very friendly and the views of the valley are very pretty...a very nice surprise!

We didn't know anything about the son of President and Mary Todd Lincoln and gained that history at our visit to his home in Manchester. A gracious home and lovely property along with the ability to view a restored Pullman car.... showing how the wealthy traveled. The history of the use of Black men as porters, their treatment and relative pay exploitation is noted and I found it ironic that the son of Lincoln did not address this by raising wages in his role as president of Pullman, instead protecting stock holders.....hmmmm, nothing too surprising or new!
That said, there is a wonderful exhibit in the main house with Lincoln's second inaugural address....quite moving.

mix a bit interesting history with the visits to Manchester's outlet stores with a stop here. Hildene will inform you about the son of Abe, who was a Capitan of industry in his own right, at a very interesting time of American's industrial growth.

This is a beautiful old home which is well maintained and sits on property with awesome mountain views! The formal gardens behind the home are amazing!
We enjoyed seeing the Pullman car and
learning the history of its use.

Not only is the house beautiful but the view around the house is breathtaking. The artifacts were great especially Lincoln's hat and the safe. We almost missed the safe but luckily we didn't. The volunteers do such a great job of taking care of the grounds. The many varieties of flowers were all beautiful. If you have extra time, spend it by hiking on the various trails around the house. You will enjoy the views.
