We really enjoyed our hike to Mount Anton. The trails were easy to follow based on the map we had printed. You can also stop in the visitors center for maple soda, local root beer, and snacks.
In terms of the hike itself, it took us 1.5 hours to ascend. (We're not that fit but we also did not need to be concerned about any joint issues at our ages.)
Advice on the summit, which we received from other hikers: keep going past what you believe to be the summit. You'll go down and then up another 50 yards or so but will have a beautiful open vista. You'll know you're there when you see a bench.
We should have returned from Mount Anton the same way most people do... the same way we came. I pity ourselves and any poor fools who extend their hike from Mount Anton to lookout road and return on old town road. Perhaps because we are amateurs, we did not interpret any gradient markings on the map properly. Long story short, instead of descending downhill, we were stuck ascending yet again on Old town road in order to return to the Visitor's Center. My iPhone told me we climbed the equivalent of 99 stories that day. IMHO, the other lookout on lookout road pales in comparison to the view at Mount Anton if you only have a day to hike here.
