Owner description: Merck Forest and Farmland Center is a non-profit educational institution with a mission to teach and to demonstrate the benefits of innovative sustainable management of forest and farmland. We offer a variety of seasonal recreational opportunities including rustic backcountry cabins and campsites for rent and over 30 miles of forest trails for recreational hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. We produce farm and forest products for sale and Vermont-Certified-Organic maple syrup. We conduct educational programs specializing in environmental sciences, sustainable agriculture and silviculture for students, adults and apprentices. Through education we seek to encourage our visitors to engage in the activities of a working landscape, and to become good stewards of the land.

We really enjoyed our hike to Mount Anton. The trails were easy to follow based on the map we had printed. You can also stop in the visitors center for maple soda, local root beer, and snacks.

In terms of the hike itself, it took us 1.5 hours to ascend. (We're not that fit but we also did not need to be concerned about any joint issues at our ages.)

Advice on the summit, which we received from other hikers: keep going past what you believe to be the summit. You'll go down and then up another 50 yards or so but will have a beautiful open vista. You'll know you're there when you see a bench.

We should have returned from Mount Anton the same way most people do... the same way we came. I pity ourselves and any poor fools who extend their hike from Mount Anton to lookout road and return on old town road. Perhaps because we are amateurs, we did not interpret any gradient markings on the map properly. Long story short, instead of descending downhill, we were stuck ascending yet again on Old town road in order to return to the Visitor's Center. My iPhone told me we climbed the equivalent of 99 stories that day. IMHO, the other lookout on lookout road pales in comparison to the view at Mount Anton if you only have a day to hike here.

They have an education center for children and Maple Syrup operation in the spring but the real draw is their trails through the forest. A variety of trails of moderate to easy difficulty. When we went there was not much snow but we went after a small snowfall and were the only tracks on the trail other than deer, bobcat, and turkey. Really pleasant place of quiet and solitude in the forest. Great for all ages, young and not so young, especially if you like the outdoors

A fun day for all ages. You can hike the mountains or stroll through the farm. See the process of making maple syrup from the woods to the boiler. You can get up close to many of the farm animals. A gift shop is available. Nice day for the whole family.

Merck Forest is free to park and see (although they ask for a donation) and has lots of great trails from short (~0.3 miles) to wicked long. Although the visitor center closes at 4pm you can still drive up and explore the land. They ask that you leash dogs near the visitor center and farm area. Overall, the views of the taconics to the west at sunset were stunning. The road up is full of potholes but nowhere near as bad as lye brook in Manchester. Would recommend Merck Forest to any nature lovers and photographers.
