Owner description: The Captain Timothy Hill House was built circa 1800 and is the oldest known house on Chincoteague Island. Originally built to have a wooden chimney...the replication of that chimney is now in place. Listed on The National Register of Historic Places and The Virginia Landmarks Register in 2011...a visit to this house is a step back in time to the early life on the island. Open to the public during the summer season with tours on Fridays 1-3 PM and additionally Wednesdays in July 1-3 PM. Other times by appointment. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated.

We were simply riding and happened upon this quaint bit of history! We walked around outside. Amazing that it is still standing.

Be sure to look for the carvings of ships/boats on the outside walls. On every side. Some are hard to find, but keep looking. Could not go inside, but you can peer through the windows. Free. Ask the museum about the history of this house.

We will be open this summer Fridays 1-3 pm and in July also on Wednesdays 1-3 pm. We would love to be open more but we need more volunteers to do that. But, please look around and peek in the windows. And, be sure to take a look at the just finished replication of what would have been the wooden chimney when this house was first built about 1800. We have been guided by some of the best architectural historians in Virginia including Colonial Williamsburg. This a private endeavor and my husband and I appreciate all the interest and good comments about the house...the restoration has been an incredible journey and a real labor of love. Louisa and Paul

Although the hours of operation were difficult to find, the tour itself was well done. It was fun to look at the graffiti on the outside of the building that was put there by sailors long ago.

Th Hill house isn't open very often, but when it is I highly recommend going if you love history! The owner's are actors and do a wonderful job disclosing the history of the house. They have spent many hours restoring the house and learning its history. It is only two rooms but wonderful.

Love it!
