“NOT A FIVE STAR - SEWER SMELL”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

The smell that came over the resort was disgusting and smelled like a backed up sewer. This resort is only half done and should not be given it's stars until it is finished. How can they assign 5 stars to this resort when the gym, spa and tennis courts are not even built? They should have to earn them and at this point I would give it a 2 or 3 star. We had 3 days of rain and there was absolutely nothing to do but stay in your room or hang out in the lobby or bars. The beach was very narrow and rocky when first entering into the water. The food at the buffet was very lacking in variety and the dishes were cold. Every morning was a major effort to try and get a HOT cup of coffee the first time. If you wanted something hot you had to wait in line for the pasta bar or stir fries which were very good and actually very tastey.

On a good note the employees at the resort tried hard and were very friendly. The ala cartes were very good especially the steak house.

ROOMS:So the place is all shiny new. The beds are hard as rock but your back won't hurt in the morning. The rooms are spotless clean and the gals cleaning do an amazing job! The fill the bar fridge with water, pop and beer each day, nice towels, linen is very nice. The rooms are pretty quiet and the air con is new and works very well, quiet.
My transformer did not work and I have traveled in Africa, Europe, USA , Turkey etc. and I have a very good converter?? Not sure what was up with that. They have great blow dryers so should not be a problem.
We stayed in 3305, ocenview, fancy suite, 2 bathrooms, sitting room separated from the bedroom, a very very nice room. (we did not pay extra I guess since we were the week 2 people and got a great deal)
FOOD: There is lots of choice in the beach rest and the buffet the 'a la cartes' well that's a bit different the steak place needs work you can get better meat cooked how you would like in the buffet. The staff were so good though and wanting to please. The Asian rest. was a bit scary the seafood platter was liked by many but mine was rubbery. The Cuban rest was very good they have pork figured out and it is very tasty. The snack bar is open 24 hours a day and the burgers aren't bad but inconsistent depending on the cook. The pizzas are SLOW when its busy and they cook them in a very mild oven so they don't rise properly, the typical Cuban approach to cooking, not sure what to do! I can't say enough about how lovely the staff are in the snack bar the bar tender Riddel is so sweet and always smiling.
MAIN LOBBY BAR: Well these guys are so good, they will make you whatever you like, they don't ask for tips but people just keep giving them money. The music at night starts about 7pm and there were 2 groups we loved a JAZZ quintet that were SO SO good. The other was a lovely trio, piano player, flute player and an opera singer, we really liked this group they are such good musicians.
ANIMATION team: Well here we gotta problem, they have not figured out the sound and they just blast the music and it interferes with the lobby bar music, the sound is so distorted it was hard to stay and listen. They might be good performers but it was just too loud people would leave I felt bad for them, I hope they figure it out.
BEACH: Well they are going to have to fix the rocks or I fear for this place, it will certainly be a deterrent for us to decide if we go back. Now having said that the GM I spoke to is on it, a very nice, smart man who gets it, the plan is to dredge up some of the rock so there is easy access, I saw a lady fall and scrape herself to shreds on the corally like rock. Children can't just run in as they are prone to do. BRING water shoes you'll be fine. You can walk both ways and it is stunningly beautiful, lots of fun beach combing, big gorgeous shells, star fish, sand bars. You can walk out and turn left at the beach and walk for 50 minutes to the next hotel and get a drink and walk back. One thing I DID love about this beach is you could swim quite far out when the tide was in or out without hitting seaweed.
Adele will take you on the catamaran, just go book a time we went for 30 mins and it was great!, included in the package, there are nice kayaks you can use as long as you want. I brought a blow up cheap raft to float around on, the beach is perfect for that. The chairs book up quick in the morning, we left our towels not once were they taken. The team will serve you drinks on the beach and someone wrote that if you didn't tip they don't come back we did not find that at all. They will get you food. We tipped every third time or so. We allot a certain amount each day and then give that out freely, these people really are poor but man are they happy, hmm, we have a lot to learn.
STUFF: They are still disorganized no signs, the front desk staff are hit and miss, they don't promote what they have going on, for instance there was some really cool outdoor couples night around the lit pool that we walked by , never heard about it but we would have booked had we known, a five coarse meal. We did talk to the Memories rep who really told us nothing. You can stay in your room on check out till 2pm but the door locks at noon, hmm, go figure that one out!
So all in all a lovely trip, Memories is currently a 4:5 at the most, currently but I do believe it will just get better and better, they are planting like crazy and trying to things up to snuff.
One weird thing we had not encountered in Cuba before and that was direct pleas for help, we had not experienced that before in Cuba, Africa YES but never hear, I was asked by 3 different people to help they showed me a picture of their child and then stated their plea, kind of awkward. But it just may be my demeanor, I love talking to the people and maybe they just saw me as someone who would help.
Bring a cup for hot and cold dual purpose, I took a Costco stainless steel cup that kept my drink cold for 3 hours! Take a rain jacket, yes it did rain one day and I wished I had a warm shell. Take 2 bathing suits stuff takes forever to dry here! Bring a little head cushion for the beach/pool chairs they are not the greatest chairs. Chocolates, they love LINDT chocolate, there chocolate is strange! Bring a water camera and snorkel gear, lots of cool fish off the beach.

Just returned from this hotel; the outdoor setting is very nice though landscaping is far from finished. The 2 pools are beautiful as is the pool bar and service. Lovely, friendly people, all! The rooms are more like a 3-star hotel and you get the feeling that you must leave either a tip or small gifts (common throughout Cuba) to receive full housekeeping service. Both buffets offer an amazing choice and the food is good as is that of the 24-hour snack bar. The 9:30 show every night is of good caliber and the entertainment staff are quite talented and work hard at engage the crowd. The lobby/piano bar also offers 1st class talent. We were impressed! Danny, who emcees just about everything throughout the day is host extraordinaire and he speaks 3 languages quite well. Major glitch #1: the beach has not yet been dressed and it was a big dissappointment for me and my travelling partner. We went down to the beach only and never returned, choosing instead to stay by one of the pools. Major glitch #2: two of the à carte restaurants (Florencia Steak House and the Creole one - the name escapes me) need serious menu revisions. The resort values everyone's opinion and badly want to improve. What we ordered at Florencia was so bad that we took 2 bites only. That sent several staff members to our table to find out what was wrong and we told them. They were most obliging and apologetic. Another glitch was some of the sights we saw during our excursion to Moron. What we saw of that historic city was the poorest quarter and a lot of begging and the same souvenirs in every shop and it seemed that everyone was begging you for a peso, a cigarette or something. Dissappointing and not the kind of sights you want to see when on vacation. But, overall, our week at the Memories Flamenco was still wonderful. We knew going in that the hotel had just opened and that we were bound to be some glitches. BTW, the pillows need improving - too large and too HARD.

Room Tip: There are no elevators at Memories Flamenco, but if you want a view of the ocean, request a 3rd floo...

Just returned from a one wk stay Feb 28-Mar 5th. The lobby is gorgeous. The rooms are ok just basic. When we booked we were told the resort was complete...far from it. Only 3 bungalows were done and lots of construction going on at the resort. The beach was by far the worst beach i've ever been to...very disappointing because my favourite thing when i travel is to lie down at the beach and jump in the water. Well, that was impossible to do. It was very rocky and could not enter the water unless you walked down the steep stairs and hang on for dear life. When you had to go up the stairs you had to hang on tight or could fall. I would not recommend this to older people. If you wanted to drink something you had to walk all the way back up to the resort to get something to drink, because there was nothing on the beach to get a drink. Once in a blue moon someone would come and ask you if you wanted a drink. And as far as having to go to the washroom...if you need to go in a hurry do not go down to the beach. We were told when we booked there was a bar at the beach. We were also told the resort was complete...not!!! No fitness centre, no handcraft market, no spa, no water sports. The food was good but lukewarm at the buffet. We mentioned it a few times and they said the temperature was fine. Our sliding screen door could not be closed or opened did not work the entire time. The bar was not fully stocked daily or the coffee. Our check out time was 200 pm. We went back to our room at 1215 and could not get into our room because they changed the lock. We got a hold of the maid and she opened it for us. We rushed to get ready and left the room early and brought our luggage out and there was a two guys in the luggage cart and stopped us and said are you room 1114? and we said no, and they just looked at us lugging our luggage...instead of saying here we will bring your luggage they just looked at us....i guess if we offered to pay them they would have brought our luggage. Five star hotel....shouldn't they bring the luggage instead of two women lugging it to the front lobby? When we mentioned at the lobby that we were locked out of our room they said you should of told us...wow! what an answer...why should we....we are suppose to have access to our room till 2. Overall we didn't pay much for this trip we got a good deal but i would not return only because of the beach. Its a new resort and they are improving it everyday but they shouldn't of told us it was a five star---it isn't.
