We have completed our big trip to New Zealand in Kerikeri at the Avalon Resort. A wonderful week in a nice surroundings with nice people! (despite less weather). From Kerikeri it was wonderful to stay in the area. The cottages are self-contained and so it was great to wake up and especially to come home in the evening. Felt great. Good beds, nice kitchen and good sanitary. The natural pool, the hot tub and barbeque are all present. Furthermore, a beautiful park. Nice how they made it. We will be happy to come back!

We arrived here just for 3 days but would love bed to have stayed longer. Set in 7 acres of beautiful grounds we had our own personal cottage with four poster bed and most delightfully furnished .
The owner Wilem was so helpful and cheerful and we had full use of the bbq and hot tub and pool. Thankfully it didn’t rain all the time !

Don't get confused, this is not a 5 star hotel. It's far better than that. You won't get room service, restaraunt cuisine or 24hr concierge. What you do get is excellent accomodation in a beautiful rustic setting with an exceptionally, friendly, welcoming and helpful host. Willem has sculptured a wonderfully magical paradise with gardens, lakes, stream, natural spring water swimming pool and even a hot tub. The resort even includes a paddock which houses a menagerie of animals including goats, kunekune pigs, chickens and a really friendly duck. The accomodation varies from lovely self contained studios to 4 wonderfully well equipped and spacious chalet cottages named Earth, Water, Fire and Air. We were lucky enough to be staying in the beautiful Air cottage with its 4 poster bed, lounge dining area and fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. There was even a decked terrace with a lovely view over the resort. Avalon Resort is in Kerikeri which is a quaint town with many natural points of interest. This is a super base location to further explore the Bay of Islands and Nothland. We loved our stay here and would recommend it highly.

Reception was really friendly, but when we entered the cottage, there was a heavy, bad and sour smell. After opening all windows and doors for about an hour, we could not notice any improvement. Also the kitchenette was very dirty and greasy.
We went up to the office and asked if the manager could do something. He came to have a look but did not seem to understand what the problem was. However, we were able to change to another cottage, which also had a bad smell (but it was a lot better), a dirty kitchen (see pictures) and smelly towels (kitchen & bathroom). Too bad, because a clean place is the minimum requirement if you ask me.
The surroundings of the cottage are really nice, you just had to be careful not to leave your door open or your terrace table unattended or chickens & ducks would enter or steal your food.
Manager did not even apologise when we confronted him with the dirtiness. It was not his business, he said, we had to discuss with the lady servicing the office...
