I’ve been taking the ferry for years. I take it to get to a vacation spot up the James River at least once a year but there are other reasons. First, it’s amazing how many people have never been on a ferry. This river ferry is very smooth and doesn’t rock. It’s a 20-30 minute trip and you can get out of your car and walk around. On most there is an enclosed viewing area with restrooms. No snack bar but again it’s only 20-30 mins. Another reason to take it is to explore the beautiful countryside in Surry, Waverly, etc. On the way you can go to the Surry Seafood Company for which you will see signs a mile or two after getting off the ferry. After that and Anna’s there aren’t too many other options unless you go to Smithfield or continue to Waverly.
For anyone visiting here are two things two remember. During the tourist season the ferry runs every half hour but the traffic get really heavy in no small part because of its location to James River Beach and The Jamestown Settlement. Second, you can go to Surry then down to Smithfield and across the James River Bridge or through Monitor Merrimack to get back to Williamsburg-essentially a loop. Smithfield can be a very nice stop with downtown having some great shops on Main Steeet and small restaurants.
