I’ve been taking the ferry for years. I take it to get to a vacation spot up the James River at least once a year but there are other reasons. First, it’s amazing how many people have never been on a ferry. This river ferry is very smooth and doesn’t rock. It’s a 20-30 minute trip and you can get out of your car and walk around. On most there is an enclosed viewing area with restrooms. No snack bar but again it’s only 20-30 mins. Another reason to take it is to explore the beautiful countryside in Surry, Waverly, etc. On the way you can go to the Surry Seafood Company for which you will see signs a mile or two after getting off the ferry. After that and Anna’s there aren’t too many other options unless you go to Smithfield or continue to Waverly.
For anyone visiting here are two things two remember. During the tourist season the ferry runs every half hour but the traffic get really heavy in no small part because of its location to James River Beach and The Jamestown Settlement. Second, you can go to Surry then down to Smithfield and across the James River Bridge or through Monitor Merrimack to get back to Williamsburg-essentially a loop. Smithfield can be a very nice stop with downtown having some great shops on Main Steeet and small restaurants.

My family lives on the Southside of the James River in Isle of Wight County. Though it is quicker to get to Williamsburg via 64W, I frequently take the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry instead because it is just so scenic and pleasant! Nothing beautiful about the ferry itself but it is a nice way to travel with absolutely no traffic. And it you're planning an outing in Jamestown, it lets you off right there!

Runs frequently. Avoid in bad weather.

We took the Ferry after leaving the Jamestown Historical Center. There is a fast inspection for security purposes. As we were leaving I asked one of the security inspectors if I paid for the ferry before boarding. I was surprise there was no charge. The Ferry is small so you stay in your car. The crossing is only about ten minutes and the ferries run continuously.

We took the fairy on our way from Williamsburg to Norfolk. It was a fabulous addition to our journey. The route on the Surry side was countryside sceinic. You simple must experience it.

This was my daughter first time taking a ferry. It took us over to another part of the island. It was exciting to find out what was on the other side. We were able to tour the island and the mansion. I love seeing the cabins in Chippokes Plantation State Park. This was a very enjoyable visit.
