“Poorly maintained”
Reviewed 28 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Had the misfortune of staying here the weekend of October 3-5. the property had numerous maintenance issues, peeling paint in the bathrooms, a bit of mold behind the toilet in one bath, a loose ceramic tile in the kitchen in the pathway area to the dining/sitting area. Although it is advertised as suitable for children, the staircase to the upper level bedrooms doesn't even have railing, and I had to be ultra vigilant to keep my twin two year old granddaughters off the steps for fear they would have a dangerous fall either from those stairs, or down the main stairs to the basement, which did not have a door or other way of closing them off.

Although the property is advertised as having two bedrooms on the main floor, the ad does not let a person know that the main level can only be accessed either from the basement, requiring walking a full flight of steps, or from a deck with winding, multi-level stairs, or an uphill gravel path to a rear deck with a couple of steps. So, reaching the main floor required effort, not easy for an elderly person or young children.

The basement level was musty smelling, with a dehumidifier running, and we found dirty linens in the hamper near the washing machine and dryer, as well as a damp bedspread in the dryer.

The TV in the master bedroom was tiny, maybe about 12" diagonal, and located on the wall away from the bed wasn't worth the effort in viewing. We could, however, view the master bath from the dining room through the frosted glass window between the two. We had to hang a towel over the window in order to give the bath occupant some privacy.

The kitchen was poorly stocked. If you expect to do much cooking, you may want to bring some pots/pans/baking dishes and other equipment with you. There are lots of plates and large serving bowls, and a few (very few) glasses (other than wine glasses, of which there were several. The toaster didn't work properly. The oven worked, but we couldn't read the temperature settings, so had to guess at the proper setting. No blender, food processor, or mixer could be found.

The bottom sheet on my bed was ripped and wouldn't stay on properly. I will give a positive in that the towels were decent and ample. Although they charge a hefty pet fee, the place has pet damage that hasn't been repaired - scratches on the door and a nasty stained carpet in the upper level front bedroom.

We didn't use the hot tub, but raised the cover and noted pine needles inside, even though it was in a screened in porch.

Were also a little disturbed that the place was for sale, with a lockbox on the door, meaning any realtor with a lockbox key/code could visit the place during our stay. A little unnerving to think someone could access our belongings while we were out during our stay.

We checked in after hours, the key was left in an envelope pinned to the office door. While it's nice to get a late check-in, this is perhaps not the safest method of handling it, as anyone could have picked up the key.

How easy was it to book the property? How easy was key pickup/access to the property?

The person who authored this review, was with the same party as the author of the review "Does Not Live Up to Description".

Please note that this site does not include all of the reviews on Laurel Place. Another review, from a traveler who stayed just 3 months prior to the folks rated in with a 5 star. Titled "Very Nice" he states that the property was "clean and well maintained". Posted on TripAdvisor July 2014.

Reviews reflect an individual's opinion, so they are subjective. The problem is when they do not accurately describe the situation. The complaints from these two persons who were part of the same party contradict one another, so who and what are you to believe ??

Their one complaint states, "peeling paint in every room", while this other complaint states peeling paint in the bathrooms. In actuality, there are three full baths in this home. Two very small blemishes in the paint existed no bigger than the size of an envelope. One behind a commode, and one in another bathroom near a skylight. They were caused by leaks and will be touched up when the drywall is completely dry. You would have to crawl behind a commode, or have a ladder to reach the either. The blemished areas are NOT
easily reached, and do not propose a hazard. Understanding that the home is 4,000 sq ft home, the peeling paint is not the horrendous condition that these persons would like you to believe.

The other contradiction amongst their complaints is the description of the kitchen floor. One complaint states "loose tiles" (suggesting multiple), while the other complaint says "a loose tile" (meaning single). Now let me put into perspective their comments. The kitchen is very large, 21' x 15'. 700 individual tiles exist. Upon inspection, ONE tile was found popped, but held in place by the grout. This computes to a .003% deficiency in the floor covering. The tile has been re-seated.

We checked for mold in the bathroom. A very small bit was found between the wall and tank of the commode of the ONE commonly used bathroom. Its probably created by the condensation caused by repeated flushing.

Design of certain features exist, which may present a problem to certain person. The one staircase is not totally closed on both sides. One side is open to the room, while the other side has a hand rail attached to the wall. Its as pictured on this site, and many staircases are built this way.

The home is mult-level, and is as described and pictured. It does NOT have a BASEMENT. It has a ground floor entry and the structure is built on a slope. (just as the photographs show) The property consists of ground floor, 1st, and top floors. The descriptions of the floors are on our website.

To the rear of the ground floor area is where the dehumidifier is placed. Its near a service area, used by staff when servicing the home. The service area contains a laundry, hence the state of its progress. This is an 'employee only' area.

Safety issues for toddlers; this is a responsibility that a parent must assume. Protection from drowning ? We are not looking over your shoulder to be sure that you promptly replace the hot tub lid, and they are not meant to be walked on. Electric sockets. If your child is prone to sticking things in them, you better prepare yourself with safety plugs. How about cabinets. We keep cleaning fluids where they can be easily accessed. Maybe you need to secure cabinets. How about baby gates to restrain toddlers to a room, rather than have free access to the entire house ?? I don't understand why these folks didn't think to restrict the twins to the living room, or family room far away from any staircases. Its unfortunate that these people did not foresee any of the safety concerns, as I believe a simple baby gate would have been helpful. We will add to our "suggested items to bring" safety devices/restraints for toddlers, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the parents to make the property 'baby safe'. Certainly, we will be happy to answer any questions you have in this regard.

The kitchen is fully equipped. We do not provide food processors, blenders, or mixers.

There are 3 TVS in the house. 2 large units, which are not mentioned, are situated in the living room, and family room.

Although these people were disappointed, they did NOT find the house dirty. Also EVERYTHING was operational. The heat and plumbing systems were functional, as was EVERY major and small appliance, the TWO fireplaces with gas logs, the THREE TVs, the double ovens, 7 ft out door hot tub, and EVERY lamp and electrical switch.
