Stayed at Amangani in December, 2016. Please note that my reviews of Aman properties tend to be more critical than for a “normal” hotel, largely in consideration of the price point. Figure you’ll be spending $1K/night at Amangani.
Conclusions: If you’re staying at an Aman, you probably don’t care that much about cost. While my/our experience there was good, it didn’t live up to Asian or European Aman, and it certainly didn’t live up to what I’d expect considering the cost.
The good: The property is gorgeous, with a sort-of Asian minimalist merged with split-rail western styling. Common areas in particular were bright and airy. Views over the valley are beautiful, and the hotel is an easy drive from downtown Jackson as well as the airport. Amangani’s staff was attentive, though there were some frustrating miscommunications. Finally, for the skiers out there, Amangani’s hotel-to-Jackson Hole shuttle and JHMR ski lounge were great! A special shout-out to Becky, Cam, and Andrew who staffed the lounge. They’ll take great care of you. I’m an outdoorsy person, and like to “do my own work,” but even I really enjoyed having the staff take care of my ski gear.
The not-so-good: Room layout was…disappointing. We stayed in an Amangani Suite for 2 nights, and while spacious, ~25% of the living area was taken up by an extraneous second walk-in closet (who needs 300sq ft of closet space??) and second bathroom. The not-so-good: Room layout was…disappointing. We stayed in an Amangani Suite for 2 nights, and while spacious, ~25% of the living area was taken up by an extraneous second walk-in closet (who needs 300sq ft of closet space??) and second bathroom. There was an unusable and unshoveled outdoor area. Subsequent, we spent 2 nights in a Deluxe Suite. The heating/cooling in both rooms was maddening, with ½ of the suite being 80 degrees F and the other ½ being 65. Also, unlike other Aman, there wasn’t the same sense of privacy as the rooms are laid out in hotel-style hallways. Both rooms we stayed in showed their age (property is 20 years old), with chips and dents in wood paneling around the doors, for example.
Food: The restaurant was high price-point (e.g., $50 dinner entrees), which is expected at an Aman, but the food was at best good and never great. Not-good examples include a $70 waygu beef filet that was chewy—I left half of it on my plate—and weakly seasoned. Good examples include an elk chop that was nicely flavored and, strangely, infinitely more tender than the waygu. Wine selections were solid, though there were limited options by-the-glass. Kids food included $25ish tortellini in red sauce that tasted packaged and jarred, respectively. Breakfast was mixed, with the cold stuff such as yogurt parfaits tasty, but the warm breakfast entrees were largely disappointing. Stale eggs benedict, and such.More
