This is not a stop on your bus tour! Floating down the irrigation channels was relaxing, but the guides really made the day. Local guys, personable, fun, knowledgeable and able to tie ancient and more modern history together along with general area information. Not just the guides, but the entire staff was great.

On a relative's recommendation, we enjoyed a fun afternoon's kayak ride high in the hills of Hawi through the irrigation ditches and tunnels. The tunnels through the hillsides were built in the early 1900s for transporting harvested sugarcane into town. Our tour guide Vernon generously shared his family history with the sugarcane and flume industry as we drove in an air-conditioned 4-wheel drive vehicle up the hillside. We first stopped for an overlook of the Polulu Valley coastline -- a gorgeous vantage point accessed on private land. The kayak tour itself was quite entertaining -- the pace was easy, and the guides had issued headlamps for each kayak in order to illuminate the long, dark tunnels carved in hillside where additional stories were shared with kayakers. Our 11-person tour included folks from ages 11 to late 60s, and all seemed to have a fun experience.

We signed up for this kayak tour through the drainage ditches and tunnels that irrigate the east side of the island. It was fascinating! Our guide, Dalsen, had obviously gone the extra mile to equip himself with all kinds of fascinating facts and stories about the history, folklore, and natural surroundings. It was a pretty neat experience riding the kayaks through the flumes and tunnels with alot to see along the way. Be prepared to get a little wet, although some of that is by choice. Highly recommend!

Combines a kayak trip through irrigation channels and tunnels with very knowledgeable guides--fun and a chance to learn about the history, legends and environment. Warning: DO read the website and stay home if you don't like dark places or have a bad back. You will get wet. Only criticism was that more get-out-and-stretch breaks would have been a big help for us old people. The hot chocolate at the end was very welcome.

Can you kayak elsewhere? Yes
Can you ride a flume elsewhere? Yes
But can you ride the irrigation ditches dug a 100 years ago and see their writings in the inside of the tunnels? A snippet of history? NO! Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Kudos to those who arranged this awesome adventure!
