“I go every year!”

Ocean Sports Whale Watch Adventure
Reviewed 2 April 2018 via mobile

Both locations for their whale watches are excellent. I go every year, and often more than once. Well run, knowledgable staff, and they know just how to find whales. I highly recommend this adventure!

If you are on the Big Island in the winter months, be sure to book a trip on The Seasmoke Catamaran. The trip leaves out of A Bay at Waikoloa Beach at 8am and lasts about 2 hours. During that time, if you’re lucky, and most of the time everyone is, you’ll be treated to a seasoned captain’s tracking of the whales that reside on the Kohala Coast during this time of the year. We were able to find the whales blow, see their backs and then see the whales up close. We saw a family, mom, baby and escort. The baby kept slapping its tail. The escort did a Breach right in front of us. It was so exciting. Don’t forget to take seasickness medication, if needed. Also don’t forget your camera. And be ready, because you never know when you’re going to hear “thar she blows!”

Aloha,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us (and the Trip Advisor Community) with feedback about your Wake up with the Whales Cruise. We're so happy to read that you enjoyed the trip, and most importantly, got to see some Humpbacks up close -- and getting to see baby playing around on the surface AND a breach!!! Wow!!
Our Whale Watch Season generally runs from December 1st through April 15th -- this year however, we've cut it short. Our last Whale Watch Cruise will be on March 31st, as the Humpbacks seem to have begun their migration back to Alaska a bit earlier this year -- though we've still been seeing humpbacks on our cruises, there is a marked decrease in the population along our coastline.
We know there are a lot of activities to choose from when you're on the Big Island, and we're honored you chose to spend part of your vacation with us!
Mahalo and we hope we'll get to share more adventures with you next time you're in our neighborhood!

This was our second time whale watching with Ocean Sports. Both experiences, though very different, were spectacular. First time, we were in mid-season for whales and saw multiple thrilling breaches. Plus, for 20 - 30 minutes, a whale came alongside our boat, the Sea Smoke. We could hear the whale breathe. A mother and calf were on the surface about 20 yards away. It was unforgettable. Our second time out we had an equally satisfying interaction with a breeding pair. Our first view of the whales was about 200 yards out. The second time, they surfaced within 20 yards of our boat and on the beach side. They came up again heading out to sea and gave us a good view of their flukes as they waved goodbye about 75 yards out. I believe the whales know the boats and react accordingly. In the case of Ocean Sports, the reaction is love and intimacy. The captain, crew and owner are warm, charming and great hosts. Mai Tai’s to celebrate our sighting! Cheers

Aloha,
Thanks so much for taking the time to provide feedback about your Ocean Sports Whale Watch Cruises. From your descriptions, it sounds like you've shared some very special moments with the Humpbacks! We also appreciate your kind words about our captains, crew, and business owner. Ocean Sports has been a fixture on the Kohala Coast since 1981, and many of us have been with the company for a majority of our working lives...the company is more than just a place to work for us, and our guests are not just customers...we're all truly 'ohana!
We know there are a lot of activities to choose from when you're on the island, and we're honored that you've chosen to join us on more than one occasion. We look forward to sharing more adventures with you next time you're in our neighborhood!

We didn’t see any whales on today’s trip, but the company wasn’t shy about keeping our $$. Read the fine print - the guarantee is for a return trip which is kinda hard to do since we live half way around the world and have the remainder of our trip planned to do other things.

They crew did think they saw a whale breach the surface on the horizon and a zodiac boat chasing it. Come to find out it was a fishing boat and the “whale” was a
jet ski.

They seem like a good group of people and company, but it would be a great service if they would build into their 99% of successful tours a full refund for those of us that don’t see anything.

Aloha,
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your Whale Watch Cruise. We're very sorry that you didn't get to see whales on the day you joined us. As you noted, our guarantee, which is listed on our website (http://hawaiioceansports.com/boat-cruises/whale-cruises/) and on our brochures, is to offer guests who don't see Humpbacks on our morning cruises an opportunity to join us again for another Whale Watch Cruise for FREE. The guarantee is good for life...so if you don't have the opportunity to schedule another trip during your current visit to the Big Island, you can still redeem your free cruise on your next visit. We appreciate that there are a lot of activities to choose from when you're on the island, and we understand that scheduling conflicts can occur, and that's why we do everything we can to ensure guests understand our policies at the time they reserve their cruises.
Though you weren't able to join us again for your FREE cruise on this trip, we hope we'll have the opportunity to share another cruise with you in the future (a cruise where you're surrounded by Humpbacks)!

We took the 8 a.m. whale watching adventure and loved it. Ocean sports picked us up from the hotel and we were guided right to the boat. The catamaran is beautiful and the crew was great (Don't hesitate to sit right in the front of the bow). We learned a ton from the naturalist on board and saw whales for more than half the trip. I nearly filled a memory card on my phone. Next time, though, I will bring a camera with a wrist strap, I was worried about dropping the phone the whole time! We were there on vacation, but there were a few people on the boat from a conference. The meetings didn't start until mid-morning, so they snuck away for the early watch. What a great idea. Now, I just need to find a conference to bring me back again! - Eric from Minnesota
