“Great and tasteful renovation, but Internet needs improvement.”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

Our family of four (kids 5 and 9) had a great stay in the Bay Club during the Christmas break. I highly recommend checking out all the beaches along the Kohala coast.
The interior is tastefully renovated, but the old appliances, e.g. microwave and dishwasher, sadly remains. The room is much larger than the two HGVCs in Waikoloa. Lanai is generously sized, and our room has golf fairway views.
As we are also working from the room (in the morning/evening), the internet is frustratingly slow! As a comparison, when we checked into King's Land after the Bay Club, the speed is much, much faster.
As we stayed on the first floor, the footsteps on the second floor is clearly audible, i.e. partition is not good at all. Frustrating when there's a young family upstairs, esp when they wakes up and start running from room to room at 6am.
Bay Club shares a pool with HGVC's Kohala Suites ( and have NO access to Hilton's pool), and although tastefully designed, the pool is rather small.

Room Tip: Pick a second floor room, which HGVC deem "premium".

Very clean, nice room, with a balcony overlooking a golf course. The grounds were beautiful, and very large. It was a short walk to the Hilton and we enjoyed the parrots, boat rides, and large pools. The room was overall wonderful and amazing.

Stayed at the Bay Club in December. Was conflicted about which of the three resorts I should book, but given the point structure of Bay Club and the fact that I only wanted a one bedroom, I took a chance. I loved the place. The island is so different from Oahu. It is desolate, very isolated, black from the lava flow remnants that are everywhere, and it is a very harsh, windblown landscape that is romantic, full of adventure, and very relaxing.

First, Waikoloa is a little oasis of condos, timeshares and two major hotels in the middle of all the desolation. There is nothing in any direction for miles. It is 20 minutes north of the airport. The only real downside was the distance to Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park. The drive is about 3 hours to the park, and given the narrow two line highways, you want to avoid night driving. But more on that later.

We entered the resort and it took a bit to find the Bay Club and to find where to check in. The Waikoloa resort, which they call the Kohala Suites, is in one big development with Bay Club. They share three pools, the gym, and parking. Check-in was at the club house in the middle of the two properties and was easy. We got a third floor room in Building 1, room 131. At first I was worried about Building one, but I would never stay in another room. It was great. Most 1 BR views were of the parking lot and beyond, with plenty of beyond to be viewed, but ours was on the corner and viewed the entire mountain range, no parking lot at all, and was wonderful

The rooms, well, they aren't really rooms. Most of my friends New York apartments are smaller than this place. We walked in and were shocked. It was so big. There is a nice sized living room, with sofa, coffee table, a few chairs and a flat-screen TV. There is a dining area next to it, and the lanai connects the two. The lanai has loungers, chairs, tables. It was a big lanai and lovely for gazing at the view. The kitchen is small but efficient, very high end appliances, and immaculately clean. Granite countertops, nice art on the walls. They supply everything you need to cook and clean. The laundry machine is in the kitchen closet.

The bedroom lies beyond two closing doors, and was very big with a king bed, dressers, closets. I wish I had such a big room at home. The bathroom had an oversized tub, closed off toilet and double sinks. There was an elevator up to the floor and a stair case as well. It was so comfortable.

I checked out the Waikoloa suites and they were smaller and not nearly as nice in my opinion. The King's Land development looked very unexciting for all the hype and high point values. I am going to try to peek inside, but I can't imagine how they could be any nicer that where I am right now. Their pools are nicer I suppose, and the gym, but it was too windy and cool to use pools so it didn't matter anyway. The one free visit to Kingsland pools is no longer offered, but for $15 per person you can go for the day. The Hilton Pools are $150 for three days of use, per person and that, in my opinion, is absurd. We didn't do it, but spent a lot of time over at the Hilton. It was fun, the beach is open to all, and there is a lot to do and see on property.

If you are not sure, go for the Bay Club. It's fantastic. We were 500 yards from the Hilton HOtel (a massive bizarrely big place with a train and boat service to get around), whereas Kingsland is remote and far from everything.

there are two shopping centers, Queens and Kings. They are both nice, with high end stores like Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Coach and even a mini-Macy's. There is a supermarket in the Queen's center that was fine. Not any more ridiculously expensive than anywhere else in Hawaii. We went to the Safeway in Kona and it was cheaper using their card, for certain items that had sales but everything else cost the same as the market on property.

For dinner, if you are here on Sunday or Monday, don't miss Sensei's 50% off everything on the menu happy hour from 5-6 pm. You have to line up by 4:30 at the latest because once all the tables are full, that's it. I would have loved it if I had paid full price, but for half price, it tasted even more delicious. They have a great menu and high quailty sushi and regular food. Wonderful. We went twice.

Definitely don't waste your points on one of the higher point level properties. There just simply is no reason to.

Room Tip: Choose Room 131 in Building One for a great 1 BR view.

Fantastic 2 bedroom suite on the second floor overlooking the golf course. The unit was well equipped with everything we required. The bathrooms were huge and beautiful. The grounds were well manicured and the pools sparkling. Everything about the resort was clean and new. My only complaint is that in the 7 nights we were there, they only cleaned the room once. When I asked for one additional cleaning they said it would cost an additional $150.00!! They did bring us extra towels when we needed them, but we had a washer and dryer and a dishwasher which made things a breeze. The barbeques next to our unit did not work too well but we managed. Another great RCI vacation!

Beautiful grounds and very large units. We had a 2 bedroom on the 2nd floor center. Split floor plan which was nice for privacy. Beds were wonderful. Overlooked the golf course. Free shuttle runs every half hour to five different locations within the Waikaloa property. Gas barbecues very clean. Kitchen fully stocked with dishes etc. Had a problem with the third tv called maint. and within 30min. was fixed and got a great referral for a local breakfast joint in Waimea only 40 minutes away. Ate their twice. Called Hawaiian Style Cafe. Go hungry portions are HUGE. Always something happening at the Queens Marketplace so go there first and pick up a flyer. Walmart and Costco between airport and Kona. Not a great beach area but we are a sightseeing couple. Small but nice pools. Wheelchair access which was nice to see. Cute pool for the kids only 1-1/2 ft deep. Nice hot tubs with the larger one at the main pool. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: MIddle unit provided an unobstructed view from the lanai and also very private. We were on the 2nd...
