Gotta put in a plug for this guy. For the money (under $10), this is the best place to eat in Hawaii. I usually eat at his other location, in Lawai, which I believe has the same menu. Almost everything he makes is terrific. It's like a takeout Roy's. Once you try it, you will be back. Many times.

Terrific place for a great inexpensive meal. Had the special combination plate, beef stew, chicken katsu and beef teri with rice and macaroni /potato salad. Delicious and enough for two. The place is take out only but there is a picnic table by the parking lot where we ate as the weather was threatening. Easy to find, just turn on Puhi Road and look for the big sign for Puhi Industrial Park, make a right turn into the park and Mark's is there on the right. Definitely worth the little detour.

If you want a good sampling of local food, don't miss Mark's Place in Puhi. Make sure you go between 10 am and 2 pm and don't expect to find a table or place to sit down. This is a catering business that has take-out service for local people at very reasonable prices. All the dishes are great. They will put it in a styrofoam container, then take it down to sit on the wall at Nawiliwili Harbor or Kalapaki Beach and watch the surfers while you eat. It's not easy to find, but if you have a good map, you will find it at 1610 Haleukana St in Puhi (close to Lihue) in an industrial area.

Definitely hard to find in/near Lihue; when we asked at the Kukui Grove mall, nobody knew ‘em. However, we found it with the help of maps in a phone book (the key is to turn on Puhi at the Kauai Community College) and a local postal carrier. Ultimate Kauai Guidebook was right – GREAT food in large portions at a typical mixed plate price in the Lihue area, clearly where the locals come for weekday lunch. The special had teri beef, katsu chicken (i.e. lightly breaded chicken filets), and a 3rd beef or pork. Hours were only 10-2, so don’t miss out - and it really is take-away, there's no place to eat right there. (We drove down to Kalapaki beach in Lihue.) They apparently run a catering service as the center of the business.
