We spent 2 1/2 weeks scouring the Wailea and Makena beaches for snorkeling opportunities. The weather and sea conditions were variable and much more so than we have experienced in west Maui... But we persisted, played it safe when the visibility was poor, and ended up seeing a lot of beautiful sealife. The beauty of snorkeling in Maui is the accessibility of excellent sites from shore, and South Maui has many, many of them. No real need for a sea-sick boat ride, so much less expensive, just an unreal collection of snorkel sites right from shore.
