The beginning of our much anticipated Hawaiian holiday started in Lahaina, our first ever visit to Maui.

On arrival at the Honua Kai, we were met with a frosty welcome at reception & nearly slipped over in the hand sanitiser which had leaked onto the floor from the free standing dispenser.

Our excitement quickly turned to disappointment on entering our room to discover the view from our room was obstructed by a large crane & other equipment. We were unaware we would be staying in the midst of construction.
One of the showers was blocked and after a lengthy wait for a maintenance person, we ended up unblocking ourselves.
Our room was very spacious, a perfect size for two couples with two bedrooms, ensuites & a decent size kitchen/living area & large balcony.
We were however horrified to see the occasional cockroach scuttling across the kitchen floor.

Being unfamiliar with the area, we were given a vague map at reception. We found the reception staff to be very unhelpful with any queries & requests. They were quick to inform us that these were managed apartments & not a hotel, as if an excuse for the lack of service & help.

This accommodation was very expensive & the additional damage protection charge came as a shock & something our travel agent did not inform us of.

If you are unfamiliar with Maui, we certainly wouldn’t recommend staying here.

Room tip: There are plenty of other better places to stay nearby

We stayed in room 439 and we loved everything about our experience. Loved the vinyl plank floor instead of carpet. ( carpet can get so icky) The view was amazing and the deck was massive and so comfortable. We cooked dinner looking out the massive corner windows. There was views from every window. We loved spending our evenings sitting there enjoying our vacation. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking dinners, including barbeque utensils, the fridge, dispensed water, and ice. So many nice little touches like a rose on our toilet paper and chocolates were left on the table for us to enjoy. There are two boogie boards four chairs, an umbrella, and a cooler for taking to the beach. There was also sand toys and a ball, so no need to worry about bringing any of those things! The beds were comfortable showers were good, and the location was fantastic. The elevator dumps you right out at the doors which head to the pool. We felt so relaxed, and at home in the room, that we definitely will come back in hopes to be in that very same place again!

Room tip: Pool gets crowded early so be down to get a spot in good time.

Our Midwest family of 8 (ages 54, 45, 21, 20, 19, 18, 16, 9 ) just returned from our week @ Outrigger Honua Kai in Maui. A LOT of money well spent-hey it's Maui- but we all couldn't be more pleased. We booked a 6th floor 3 bdrm/ 3 bath condo (thru kbmhawaii.com since they give you a free night in a weeklong stay, many freebies in room). Condo was new, updated w/ comfy beds, gorgeous big bathrooms, large gorgeous kitchen, lanai w/ great furniture & dining table. View was stunning from our lanai, saw 100's of whales & the sunsets were breathtaking.

Honua Kai fit the bill for our busy, vacation loving family. LOVED the relaxed Hawaiian family friendly vibe day/night, we were impressed the whole week, here's our families opinion..

We LOVE Dukes Restaurant on site which has amazing food/ drink options/ excellent service serving breakfast/lunch/dinner, MANY stunning pools/ hot tubs/ open late & cleaned daily, GORGEOUS updated condos/ kitchens/baths, beautifully landscaped property which at night turns into a tropical tiki-lit paradise, small on site grocery stores selling a mix of Hawaiian made / brand name products & made to order coffee drinks/ sandwiches, on-site Spa where girls booked relaxing massages, convenient drink service @ pools & order food @ Dukes take out desk (located pool side).

Honua Kai location: on a quieter stretch of Kaanapali Beach with several condo developments (but still within walking distance of chaotic Whaler Village for shopping/dining, iconic Black Rock & the busy hotel zone of Kaanapali Beach). Beach is perfect for snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, boogie boarding. Do it all right there! Whale season was during our stay, we saw so many whales all day. Also the Boardwalk that connects many hotels/condos goes for miles (thru a few parking lots sometimes) runs directly on the ocean side of Honua Kai. Perfect to run/walk/stroll all times of day, felt safe all times of day. Location was perfect for all excursions: golfed @ Kapalua & Kaanapali courses, ziplined a dragon fruit farm just outside Lahaina, kids loved Cats Cafe Diner in Lahaina(no actual cats here:) can't be missed for a casual family breakfast, lunch or dinner.)

THANK YOU staff & cleaning crew of Outrigger Honua Kai for making our holiday together amazing & special. We'll be back Christmas 2023/2024.

Room tip: Book this resort for your family if you're looking for Hawaiian vibes w/ modern amenities & one of the best restaurants on-site!

We just returned from a 10 day trip to Hanua Kai, at the Hokulani Tower. We stayed on the 6th floor and had a wrap around balcony.

We had a perfect trip. The weather was rough the first day but after that it was sunny skies and warm temperatures the entire time we were there. Our room had two large bedrooms and two full baths. We had a washer and dryer in our room which I used every day - this was a massive perk and reduced the amount of clothes we had to bring on the trip.

We had groceries delivered to our room before we arrived as we didn't get to the resort until midnight. It was expensive but well worth it as we woke up the next morning and were able to have a full breakfast. The kitchen was great - no issues at all.

The condo is very large and gave our kids lots of space to avoid each other when they wanted to. We had two kids in one room and our teen son slept on the pull-out sofa in the living room. My husband and I were in the other room.

The views from our balcony were unbelievable; like a picture. There were cherry pickers in the centre courtyard as workers were painting the building and doing some upgrades. You honesty didn't even notice them after a while. No big deal. My kids played soccer in the little field there when they didn't want to swim.

The beach is right at the resort and you can rent umbrellas or people would offer you theirs after they were done. My kids swam in the ocean every single day. There are lots of pools as well, and we swam in them every day as well and every night - they had the whole area lit up with tiki lights. It was very relaxing.

There are two small stores, one in each tower. Prices are a bit nuts but you are on vacation so you have to expect the pricing will be higher. There is underground parking included in the tower and it's very easy to use; no issues with finding a spot and it's super quick to the elevator and back to your room. The area in general (Kaanapali) is wonderful and I preferred it to Wailea. We went to Wailea one afternoon to check out one of the more expensive resorts and it looked like you had to take a shuttle to the beach. I'm glad we never had to do that. Kaanapali is much more family friendly and relaxed, we liked the vibe there much more than Wailea.

This resort is very close to stores and restaurants and walking distance to the Luau we attended near Black Rock beach. There is a really nice walking path along the beach that I walked early every morning that runs along the shore and passes lots of other resorts. Many people going for runs and walks here every day. Everyone is pleasant and in a good mood; we met lots of tourists from the United States and everyone was super friendly. We watched the sunset on the beach every night.

My two daughters got stung by a jellyfish one day but it was a fairly quick recovery. The beach area can be rocky so wear water shoes. We bought some at the ABC store down the street. There is a grocery store a 5 minute drive away as well as a Starbucks; you can buy all your groceries there. There is a parking lot with food trucks in it in the other direction, (turn left instead of right out of the resort) very quick drive. We had some amazing Malasadas there one afternoon. There is also a fun breakfast restaurant called Slappy Cakes where the kids make their own pancakes at the table. This was a two minute or less drive from the resort.

The resort has 4 bbqs that are free to use down by the pools and we bbq'd a few nights with food we bought at the grocery store which was awesome - we were able to make really good meals and enjoy them on our balcony for a fraction of the cost of going to a restaurant.

We had almost zero interaction with the resort staff because we had no issues the entire time we were there so I can't comment on that. The staff at the small stores were friendly. They sell gelato and smoothies downstairs which my kids loved. There are multiple elevators in the building so you can get around very easily and get back to your room within minutes from the beach or the pools. It is also very close to Front Street (maybe a ten minute drive) where there are lots of little shops and restaurants. We really loved the Ululani shaved ice there, which we had almost every day, I may never want shaved ice again as long as I live - and we ate dinner at Kimo's and Down the Hatch, as well as others. You can just walk right into any restaurant or store to shop and it's right on the ocean.

There is a restaurant called Dukes at the resort which was pretty good. We ate here a few times. There can be a wait to get in so they text you when your table is ready. There are restaurants at the other resorts along the beach as well - you can easily walk to them by walking along the shoreline path.

There were many whales there this time of year and we saw whales constantly from our balcony and from the beach. It was almost unbelievable, they would jump right out of the water. We were told they are common this time of year. Just keep your eyes on the road when driving because they can be a distraction!

We had a great trip here. It was a very long journey for us, 12 hours of flying, but we feel it was worth it and we would recommend it. I hope this information is helpful to others.

We stayed there February 8 through the 15th. We stayed in room 331. We had issues with roaches in our room. We contacted management the second day about the issue. They asked if we were going to be away from the room so they could have their maintenance team look at the room. They sprayed and put out traps. We got back none spotted. The next morning they were running on the counter tops and floor. We asked for another room and none available. We said this was not acceptable. They called a pest control company and they came in and treated the room. That night nothing but the next morning they were running again on the counter tops and floor.. we kept all our food in the refrigerator or on the balcony. There was know compensation for our troubles just I am sorry and will let management know. We will not stay there again.
