We stayed earlier this month at the Honua Kai Condo 1024 rented through Maui Paradise Properties on Trip Advisor. It was a mountain view on the 10th floor. We have been coming to Maui for many years. In fact, we watched the Honua Kai being built. We would have lunch at Duke’s and in passing through we remembered it to be a very nice property, so we decided we would book and stay there.
The booking with Maui Paradise was easy, convenient and the people we encountered were prompt and very agreeable to work with in making our reservations. After a very long and tiring trip, we arrived a few hours prior to check in and figured we would just hang out in the lobby or at Duke’s until the room was ready. We spoke with Maria and she said the room was nearly ready and we could check in early. She met us in the lobby very shortly and escorted us to the condo and explained the doors and thermostat and where everything was.
At first glance, the condo appears to be neat and clean, but this condo seriously needs a thorough cleaning. I think whom ever does the cleaning does a quick vacuuming, wipe down of counters, stove and fridge, replenishes towels, makes the bed and that’s pretty much it. The bathroom had hair all over the floor and in the tub/shower area. The baseboards are so dirty, they seem covered in grit or soot. The carpet in the living area was worn, stained and seemed pretty dirty. All the furniture was worn with water rings from glasses and they appeared to never see a dust rag because the glass tops were thick with dust. Although the kitchen is well equipped with full size appliances, the pots and pans and dishes could use replacement. One non-stick pan had the non-stick stuff coming off which rendered it unusable and the dishes are mismatched and pieced together. Some of the cooking utensils had sticky goo and the dishwasher handle was broken. One coffee cup had a big chip in it, so couldn’t be used or you may cut your lip. The condo was smaller than what we are used to. The rooms being smaller and the bathroom tiny with only one sink and zero counter space. We thought we would use the lanai, but upon opening the door realized because of the location, it had lots of traffic noise and didn’t make it very enjoyable to be out there, so we never used it. However, inside the condo it was very quiet. We never heard doors slamming. The elevators were very fast even though we were on the 10th floor. They do have a washer and dryer which was nice because we were able to wash a few loads while there and there is a coat closet with beach gear, chairs, toys and cooler. They also provide dishwasher soap (but not for handwashing) and detergent and dryer sheets. We called ahead to see if pool towels were provided and they said yes, so we didn’t bring any, but bring your own, because what they had was pretty pathetic.
We spent nearly every day at the pool, but the pool was a huge turn off because it was ice cold! We could barely get in! The ocean water was warmer. What a disappointment. For the money paid to stay at this resort, you would think they could heat the pool a little to make it comfortable to go swimming. Another turn off, but this cannot be helped by the resort, was the number of children under the age of 5. There were so many kids, you simply could not relax because there was always a baby crying or screaming. I guess this is fine for young families, but for two adults without kids who wanted to just relax, this was not a good thing.
There is a fitness room, but after locating it in the other building and seeing how small it was, we did not use it.
There is a small grocery store with a good variety of supplies and there was a coffee shop inside where you can get a coffee and pastry or a sandwich.
Parking was good, with parking in front or underground. We found the one and only ice maker in the underground garage inside a laundry room. Being on the 10th floor, getting ice was not convenient. To solve this problem, when I was at Safeway I grabbed a few extra vegetable bags and filled those and brought them up and put them in the freezer.
I wish my review could be more positive, but this was our experience. For the money we spent for a week, we could have stayed at a much nicer hotel. I expected the standards to be better than what it was.
