We stayed for 5 nights in C7, 2 bedrooms, nicely decorated, updated appliances and bathrooms. Washer/dryer in the unit and portable air conditioners. Great view of the ocean and pool area. It was a bit pricey but everything in Maui is expensive and we booked late. Better than a hotel for 5 nights with 2 teens. Lots to do close by with great snorkeling at Kanapali.

Room Tip: Building C offers good view of sunset over the ocean but we didn't see other buildings.

My family and I have enjoyed coming to Kahana Sunset for more than 25 years, frequently staying in the B,C, and D units. This year we decided to spent a little more money to stay in the ocean front A units. Unfortunately our unit, A9, was substandard, dated and did not meet the standards you would expect at Kahana Sunset.

I would avoid this unit until the following 4 items get fixed:

• The condo badly needs a paint job. The walls and baseboard are scarred, stained and dirty. Disgusting. Wouldn’t be surprised by this in Thailand, but West Maui!
• The refrigerator is an eyesore and needs to be replaced. The freezer side is rusted out. Kind of looks like it was picked up second hand from Sanford and Son’s yard.
• The front window sill is rusted and chipped. Badly needs repair.
• Replace the old, dirty and stained carpeting.

I would further recommend to the owners that they:

• Replace the old and underpowered appliances, particularly the small Bosch washer and dryer.
• Install a motorized awning over the patio. The patio is an awesome setting for late afternoon cocktails. Without an awning the sun can become unbearable. Many of the units have done this at Kahana Sunset.

We like Kahana Sunset. There is much to like about this family oriented place. The grounds are fantastic, you are right on the ocean, barbecuing at night is a treat, and employees work hard to make sure you have a good stay. I’d just stay away from A9 until badly needed improvements are made.

Aloha Duke,

Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate the fact that you've been coming to Kahana Sunset for 25 years and truly value your input. We are working with the unit owner to make the improvements you suggested. The tropical environment and rental wear and tear shortens the life of appliances and carpet no matter how much TLC provided by our staff. We look forward to seeing you and your family again!

Finishing 10 days at the resort in building D. We loved the place with the two decks, two bedrooms, parking at the door, laundry in unit, boogie boards and pool. The pool is nice but the beach has an undertow that makes it unsafe for small children. Fortunately, the beaches towards Kapalua have a smoother wave action for small children. We stayed here thirty years ago and loved it and did this time too but due to the awful traffic between here and Kahalui we may not return. Be prepared to take 1 and 1/2 hours to go twenty miles between the airport and here.

Aloha!

We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at Kahana Sunset. Our return guests, whether yearly visitors or after a 30 year break, are what makes Kahana Sunset feel like home.

You are correct that at times there is an undertow on our bay and you were wise to find a more protected bay just a few minutes up the road. The ocean outside Kahana Sunset is variable depending on the weather - smooth as glass one day and crashing waves another.

We hope you don't wait another 30 years to return!

Mahalo

We stayed here three night with other friends. Condos are pretty nice IF you rent one of the more expensive units facing the ocean so they get the sea breeze. We did not. Even with the multiple fans, our unit was hot, humid, and airless and we sweated through the night waking up tired and cranky. The lanais of the units all connect so there isn't much privacy as people walk back and forth and look in. There is no restaurant on property or in walking distance. There is a nice little beach and a little pool. Would not recommend this property unless you choose the more expensive ocean facing units.

Aloha Elizabeth,

We're sorry to learn that you did not completely enjoy your visit. During most of the year, the trade winds help keep our units quite comfortable. But for those few times when the trade winds stop, it is helpful to have AC. If having guaranteed climate control is essential to your comfort, we do have units whose owners have installed AC and we'd recommend requesting one of these units when booking. The nominal increase in rental rate is well worth a good night's sleep! As for your unit location, we list our units by location and view and are priced according to their proximity to the ocean. Many guests enjoy the views of our beautifully landscaped grounds and the lower room rates for our non oceanfront units.

We are reviewing our website to make sure the local amenities are listed accurately. There are several restaurants, a grocery store, salons, and pharmacy just 1/4 mile up the road in Napili.

Mahalo for your review. We appreciate hearing if there is anything that will help us improve our guests experiences while staying at Kahana Sunset.
