Waimea Bay was very nice when I visited, but I also know that inexperienced swimmers have had fatal accidents during the winter months.

Waimea Bay is often described as a highlight for visitors to O'ahu, and we would agree. Since it faces the west it is an excellent place to catch the sunset. There's a large two-story rock that you can jump off of, but be careful as the rip currents near the rock can be bad if the waves are strong. Be careful of the wave action in general-depending on the time of year, the swell can reach towering heights. Definitely not for anyone but expert swimmers if the waves are any higher than 5 feet or so. The lifeguards leave before sunset, so be extra careful after they leave. You do not want to get caught in the swell that rises in this place. Parking is limited. Waimea Valley offers paid parking, but it is worth it to drive around the small parking lot for a spot and wait a little bit to get it for free.

This bay is a highlight for many who visit Oahu. The shore break waves can be absolutely spectacular; however, not conducive to play in by the novice. Check weather and surf reports to learn of conditions at this beautiful beach. If you like to sit on the beach and watch the surf and the colorful sunsets, this is the place for you.

Enjoyed an afternoon swimming around Waimea Bay.
Small car park within the bay.
Large rock for people to jump off at their own will.
Lifeguards.

The North Shore is such a nice break from Waikiki. Great surf and surfers. Far, far less tourists and commercialism compared to Waikiki (i.e., Tokyo east).
