Byodo-In Temple is located in the Valley of the Temples. It isn't a functioning temple.
It is a replica of an actual Buddhist temple located in Japan. The building is beautiful.
The centerpiece of the temple is a statue of a Lotus Buddha.

The grounds are also gorgeous. There are ponds teeming with koi and I also saw black swans. Also on the grounds there is a large gong that you can strike for luck. Everything radiates tranquility.

The charge to see the temple is $5. There is also a small gift shop. Once you leave the grounds of the Byodo-In Temple, drive thru the Valley of the Temples, which is a cemetery. Probably the most beautiful cemetery I've ever seen. A good stop.

We paid 5 dollars per adult and it is only worth it to take some wonderful pictures. For some reason it feels peaceful inside. There were people praying so you need to be respectful amd quiet while in the temple since it might not be your religion but it is for other people. A place to see at least once

I actually stumbled across the Byodo-In Temple while searching for filming locations from the TV show Lost. I clearly remembered the scene featuring the temple, and when I found out it was a real place that I could visit, I didn't hesitate. The temple is actually a non-denominational replica of a 900+ year old Buddhist temple in Japan and provides for a very unique experience...especially for those who haven't had the opportunity to visit East Asia and see the real thing.

One of the keepers of the Temple took us on a nice detour "behind the scenes" to see some of the memory boxes that people have set up for themselves in the afterlife. While he admitted that he was a "salesman" and let us know we could secure such a box for a fee, he wasn't pushy at all! Rather, he greatly added to the experience and gave us some very basic insights into Buddhism.

Overall, the Temple provides visitors with a chance to relax and think in a beautiful setting. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

The grounds here are beautiful--the setting is magical--misty mountains in the background--very peaceful. We rang the gong for good luck and loved seeing the koi fish in the ponds along with the ducks.
