The Castle Inn is in the best part of San Francisco - lots of good eateries nearby, close to Little Italy, Chinatown, the Crooked Street, and its downhill to Presidio/Golden Gate and Fishermans Wharf. Cable cars run nearby. The inn itself is clean, with fridge, microwave, and a great shower. Parking is free and safe. Wifi is fine.
The only minor critique is the sparse breakfast and on our final night, we had noisy late arrivals on one side, and noisy early risers on the other - but that can't be blamed on the hotel.
Would not hesitate to stay there again.

Room tip: Ask for the top ( third) floor.

We picked here cos of the free parking and location. It ticked these boxes but otherwise was dated, with the carpet old and peeling away where it joins together. The flooring in the bathroom had stains. The bedsheets and curtains were likewise dated. I am sure with an update to the flooring - which seems overdue -  there would be much improvement. The breakfast was unpretentious to the max with yoghurts, packaged pastries and cereal bars, fruit, coffee and juice

First the disclosure. I got this motel for the discounted price (~$130/night). An unbeatable value for San Francisco considering the location - ~20 minute walk to Fisherman’s Wharf and China Town. Lombard street is even closer and Polk street with lots of restaurants is just around the corner. The room itself was small, but that was expected. The important thing, it was clean and even had a fridge and a microwave. Few towel racks and toilet paper holder would have been helpful, but, this is very minor. There was a small breakfast selection (oatmeal, yogurt, coffee, and tea) that could be taken to the room. And, of course, another invaluable feature – free parking, which is a huge bonus for San Francisco.
The biggest complaint about the room are the mattresses. They were very soggy, which made it hard to sleep and created some back pains.

Although the people up front are extremely nice and helpful you couldn't pay me to stay here again. 1st we heard the construction ALL night. That is not their fault, however being given a heads up would have been nice. 2nd, the elevator was hit and miss. It hasnt been inspected since 2016 according to the paper. As we checked out it would not work. We had to haul 4 days of luggage down all the stairs. 3rd, the pillows felt like they are 100 years old, one was not a pillow but a foam block. They do not have any extras. 4th, the sheets were dingy yellow. Looks like they never use bleach. 5th the room had a musty gross odor despite them leaving the window open. We had to go get air fresheners at Walgreens. So my 2 stars are only because of how nice the front desk people are.
