Description: Founded in the early days of the Gold Rush in 1849, Boudin Bakery is the creator of the Original San Francisco Sourdough French Bread. French immigrant Isidore Boudin brought his prized French baking skills with him to San Francisco in mid-century. He applied these classic techniques to the region's traditional tangy "sour" dough, producing the now iconic bread with its signature dark-gold, crunchy crust, soft chewy center and distinctive flavor. Since that inspired marriage of Old World artisanship and local flavor, San Franciscans and visitors from around the globe have lined up outside Boudin's doors to savor the aromas and enjoy a fresh loaf of the Original San Francisco Sourdough French Bread. Boudin Bakery still uses Isidore's cherished recipe as well as a portion of his original "mother dough" in every loaf. Mother dough is an ancient baker's method of leavening bread with natural yeast found in the air and cultivated with a mixture of water and flour or grain. Isidore's mother dough captured the wild yeast indigenous only to San Francisco's fog-cooled climate. It yields a distinct taste and texture not found anywhere else in the world.

This SF institution has a very deserved reputation for good quality food at very reasonable prices. We've visited the cafe in the basement of the Union Square Macy's and its main facility on Fisherman's Wharf. FYI, the Wharf location is about 20% more expensive than the Macy's location, even though the food is the same. The clam chowder and chili bowls are amazing - come with an appetite, if you plan on eating the entire bread bowl. I also ordered on two different occasions sandwiches, each made with sourdough bread - the french dip and the turkey and cheese sandwich. Both were very good and each came with a nice amount of meat. Prices are very reasonable. This is a must visit restaurant in SF.

Boudins was recommended to us for their clam chowder in a bread bowl. We went there on our first day of exploring SF. It was good, but sooo busy. There are many places in Fishermans Wharf that also serve clam chowder (and they get their bread from Boudins), and chances are, it's less expensive.

Came for late lunch after shopping at Macy's. We ordered grilled cheese w/salad and tomato soup. Also grilled ham & cheese sandwich. Every time we come no matter which Boudin location, the food is always delicious.

The clam chowder in bread bowl was bland compared to the ones I had tried at Fisherman's Wharf - Alioto's waterside cafe and Scoma. I had wanted to try the Boudin at the wharf but the queue there was quite long. Had chanced upon this Boudin stall at the basement of Macy's where the queue was relatively short. Was disappointed with the quality and wonder if it's the same at the boudin wharf? If anyone has tried both - do let me know!

The food was excellent. I had a chicken salad sandwich which was a large portion. It came with a salad also. It was an excellent sandwich.
