I have stayed at the Handlery a few times and always get the same experience which is good. The rooms are okay but very noisy due to street below. Good location to either work or see the sites. The staff is helpful and eager to please. It is a dated hotel with little amenities. The elevators are very slow and the hotel is confusing to navigate.
I stayed for 4 nights and it was an okay experience.

We stayed in the older section facing Geary street which had nice period features. We found the staff (both front office and cleaning) very courteous and helpful. Breakfast was included with three choices which was served promptly. The location is close to the BART and Muni transport which gets you around very cheaply and also near to the historic cable cars. There are lots of shops and restaurants in the area and it is also close to the large Westfield centre. A really lovely stay in a historic hotel.

Room tip: Rooms in the historic section facing Geary St are lovely with period features

As all San Fran hotels seem expensive for what you get I have not marked this in my ratings.
Otherwise the hotel is excellently located for Union square, shopping and working and is easily accessible to transport. The rooms are a little dated but clean and well sized. The bed was very comfy and the temperature was good.
It does have a nice heated outdoor sheltered pool and at a price parking. It's valet only and the guy is a bit of a grump but the car came quickly.
All in all a nice place to stay.

This hotel is located in the center of everything. Close to the trams plus the tour buss. It's oldey and has a charming feel lovely decor. The pool is a surprise it is out door but heated. Staff friendly and very helpful. Would go back again.

The location of this somewhat grubby and dirty Union Square boutique hotel is its sole merit. Our room service breakfast, ordered the night before, was delivered 45 minutes late. (The hotel manager was unsympathetic at check-out.) When it finally arrived, the hot food was cold and the cold food meager in portion. Much in our room was broken, including a shower component, our TV remote control, etc., and by the way the shower head is not suitable for anyone taller than a medium height woman. The service in the pricey ($52 per day) attached garage was good, at least. There are plenty of comparably priced boutique hotel options in Union Square. I would not stay at this one.
