We stayed here for 4 nights based on its location, TA reviews and the price. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our hotel room was very spacious and more than accommodating for us. The decor of our room was tasteful and a place you could relax after a long day sightseeing. Our room did not come with view that was not that great unfortunately because of its location to other buildings around it. Complementary, toiletries, tea and coffee and a newspaper (daily) were provided as well as a iron and ironing board too. Very sizeable TV was provided with a wide range of TV channels to watch. Our room came with a continental breakfast (pastries to share), fruit juice and tea and coffee of your choice. You complete an order form of what you want and what time you want it delivered to your room and leave it on the outside of your hotel door the night before. The hotel is approx. 40 to 45 minutes from San Francisco Airport inc 10 minute up hill walk from hotel’s nearest station (5th & Market - BART train) and the fare was approx 8 US dollars per person one way from the airport. The hotel neighbours the area Tenderloin (to the west of the hotel and Union Square) which after walking inadvertently through at night I would not recommend. Our experience at night there was trouble free but did highlight the issue of there being a large number of people sleeping on the street, urination, cannabis and alcohol smells that some visitors could find uncomfortable and/or intimidating. We did feel safer walking around other areas in San Fran whether it be day or night. The hotel is 5 to 10 minute walk from Union Square and it’s main attractions and approximately a 10-15 minute walk from Chinatown. Fisherman’s Wharf is a 30-35 minute walk away via Chinatown & North Beach (Little Italy) and not that hilly either. It provides a nice scenic walk. A taxi to Fisherman’s Wharf cost 10 US dollars. A single bus fare journey is 2.75 US dollars per person regardless of your destination in San Fran (exact fare required as no change is given). Decent hotels in the area are not cheap but The Donatello represented good value for what it offered and its location compared to other hotels in the area. We would stay here again and recommend it to others.
