Tom, the owner spent a lot of effort before and during our stay to make this trip very special for us. We new exactly what to bring and were very comfortable in the hogan. The road there is very sketchy but we made it without bottoming out, and it was a big part of the experience. A rare rainstorm wiped out the Kane river crossing and Tom drove out to guide two of us across. A pay loader came out to open the road and I easily passed with our Subaru and made it to the hogan, about 1.25 hours from Moab for us, others do it in less than an hour. SUVs or at least a high ground clearance car like our Outback are essential.
The hogan is essentially a round stacked log structure encased in mud/morter. Inside there were newish folding mattresses that we stacked two high and were very comfortable. There were fans and an AC, one large drum, and three smaller ones, electricity, and lighting, and 10' of head room. Although it had 10 single mattresses, I would say it could sleep about 3 couples comfortably. Outside there was a flagstone patio, a log shade pergola over a table with four chairs, a clean gas grill with griddle, and a spectacular view of the mountains and Colorado river. Nearby (less than 100') was a bathroom with hot water and an outdoor shower. We brought sleeping bags and sheets, pillows, a camping stove and cooking/dining equipment. We brought a cooler for beverages, and a portable AC/DC refrigerator for perishables. Tom offered the use of a refrigerator and pots/pans in a nearby rental....but you're a long way from store bought ice.
We could have spent weeks there just hiking, but Tom has two 4x4s for a very low rental fee, 4 kayaks, and a world class disc golf course. We used the 4x4s and kayaks to go exploring. He also has a lot of stories to tell, and a 200 pound tortoise that enjoys chasing dogs. We brought our lab, and while we were chatting with Tom, the tortoise chased our lab all over the parking lot and into the lodge. It's top speed was only about .25 mph but it was very persistent.
If you're looking for adventure, spectacular views, peace and solitude, the hogan is perfect. We're retired, 60+, cargo van campers and we thoroughly enjoyed this trip...we'll be back, thanks Tom.
