My husband and I had the opportunity to take a tour of this Museum with a husband and wife volunteer tour guide team. They each took turns talking about the buildings, the pond, the memory garden etc. They really did seem to enjoy what they did which always gives a little more insight to a tour. Once again, it verified how all Americans pulled together during the war.

This has some very interesting historical information in about 3 buildings related to the Manhattan Project. They are working to include more sites and displays. In time it could be more beneficial to visit. It is mostly operated by volunteers who are understaffed.

Driving to Las Alamos from Santa Fe is easy enough and its a good road. The museum is most definitely worthy of a visit. So much history and something that will forever affect world events. For us this was a museum. We have also visited the Oak Ridge, TN museum. This tour really made the connection of how the bombs were conceived, designed, constructed, tested and ultimately made ready for war. The parking is easy, plenty of access and during our visit there were not many others visiting. The surrounding grounds and structures are a must see as well. Overall this was a day very well spent.

The group of buildings that make up this county historical museum are situated in a peaceful park-like setting. The museum complex does a good job of documenting everyday life for area residents prior to, during, after the US government's decision to confiscate land and facilities for the development of the atomic bomb.

There is a large display dedicated to the Los Alamos Ranch School and a working homestead cabin that includes a volunteer in period dress. Visitors come away with a better understanding of how Los Alamos and the lives of its citizen changed abruptly as they were evicted from their homesteads and property and were forbidden to say why.

The photos and other memorabilia documenting the all-out secrecy of the work being conducted that resulted in a massively destructive weapon provide a sharp contrast to bright and well-lit room where visitors are invited to make an origami crane as a folded wish for peace. The museum's collection of paper cranes is shipped to Hiroshima, Japan where they join millions of other cranes offered each year to the Children's Peace Monument. This is a most fitting and memorable part of a visit to this local history museum.
