My wife and I enjoy theater in NYC, Chicago, LA and London. How great it is to see such talent in a theater where every single seat is great. The Producers is running at ACT in Asheville. The theater just completed a full renovation. Comfortable seats, convenient parking, and plenty of wonderful restaurants to enjoy a meal before the show.

The show started as expected and got even better with every scene. Mel Brooks is a master of making points with comedy. The actors brought the pages to life and the audience response was fantastic. It was a perfect night with plenty of laughs. We talked about the show and several of the actors all the way home. Don't miss The Producers during its run at ACT. It will be a night out you will enjoy.

As a disclaimer I should note that I have performed with ACT in the past. That being said, I am not an easy audience member. ACT's current production "The Producers" is amazing! Very high energy from start to finish. Great theatre at the highest level. The directing, the choreography, the set design and costumes are all excellent. The sound was also great. The renovated theatre is a pleasure to be in and every facet of it, including the acoustic improvements, were all well thought out. The acting is first rate. I could compliment them all but Zacary Landholt simply is Max Bialiystock. Mathew Harper as Leo Bloom is also excellent, as is the rest of the cast. This show is a must see!

The past few years we have visited Asheville we have always enjoyed a show at the Asheville Community Theatre. This year due to renovations, the main theatre was not available but we were so glad we were able to go to 35 Below, an intimate black box theatre where performances produced by local theatre groups. Tonight we saw “The Realistic Joneses” about two couples both named Jones, who become neighbors. A bittersweet production as these two couple’s lives become entangled all while facing and coping with relationships and mortality. With humor entwined with the simplicity of other’s responses to simple words or statements, we watch warm, fun and sadness in the lives of each of these individuals and couples. The unintentional humor keeps a soft, light side to the sad issues being faced. A show that has one reflecting later on their own lives and how we each cope with challenges. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and found ourselves talking not only immediately after the play but later on, too. 35 Below is a truly small intimate black box theatre. We will definitely visit again.

ACT has been around a long time. When I was in my early 40s I spent one or two terms on their Board of Directors. It's always challenging being part of an organization that lives or dies based on the support of Individuals (theater-goers) and local donations from various groups. The theater and Asheville in general have changed dramatically in the ensuing 30+ years. The city has grown and matured into a true tourist destination. Asheville is now the Beer Capital of the US. The Food scene has grown and flourished with many James Beard acknowledged Chefs and a couple winners to boot. ACT has remained a staple for the arts in both the main theater upstairs and the black box theater downstairs that highlights local and aspiring writers, actors and directors. When I was on the Board the highlight of that time period was bringing Charlton Heston and his wife to Asheville to read for the audience "Love Letters". Heston and his wife ran ACT for a number of years until he became successful in Broadway. Heston's return to Asheville and ACT was a fund raiser for the theater and to give back to place his career began. I remember well, activism aside what a gracious guest he and his wife were. Asheville is better for the arts as are it's residents.
