We're soooo happy to see this new restaurant in Charlestown.
This was the location of the previous Chow Thai Cafe on Main Street across from the Bunker Hill Mall. Sweet Rice is off to a fantastic start in their first week. This is a very good Thai restaurant and Sushi bar, both of which are welcome additions to a neighborhood in need of a few new non-pubby restaurants.
There are two full menus. One Japanese/Sushi, and one Thai. We had a huge sampling of lots of dishes and they were all outstanding.
We started with a Rainbow Roll, Shrimp Tempura, and Tom Kha Gai soup. The fish was really fresh and the sushi rice was fantastic. So many sushi restaurants overlook how important the rice is in really good sushi. The Shrimp Tempura was hot and crispy and light and accompanied by excellent broccoli and green bean tempura to boot. The soup was light and delicious, and the chicken in the soup was tender, not rubbery as is so often the case.
Our main courses were Beef Panang Curry, Tofu Yellow Curry and Pad Thai. The curries were very spicy, so be mindful when you order. We like spicy food, so we were really happy...but order light spice if you're not really into it. Everything in the Panang was perfectly cooked. The green beans were bright green and crunchy, the pineapple was hot and sweet, and the beef, like the chicken in the soup, was tender and flavorful. I tasted the other entrees and they were also excellent. .
Sadly, they don't yet have their alcohol license, but they expect to in about 3 weeks (early May, 2016). The only thing that would have improved the dinner was a nice cold beer.
The service was pleasant, polite and attentive. The owners were there and didn't just ask a perfunctory "how was your meal" as we left, but proactively asked for feedback, so we chatted with them for a few minutes before we left. They were passionate about their food and their business and excited to be part of the neighborhood.
If Sweet Rice can maintain the quality and enthusiasm of their opening week, they've got a bright future ahead. And a couple of sushi restaurants in Medford and Cambridge are going to feel the shift in demand this summer.
Well done, folks! Welcome to Charlestown.
