We loved being in Tupelo! Not nearly as small as we expected, we made sure we drove past Elvis’ birthplace, (just a tiny house with a front porch, and a museum and lovely walkway set up around it) but were unable to visit the museum as we arrived late. However, it was so fun to imagine what it must have been like to be an 11-year old boy who walked to school and made a stop on his way home at Johnnie’s Drive-In! What a cool little place that obviously hasn’t changed much! The menu looked fantastic, with its real diner food, and Moonpie selection. We stopped in for a treat, and ended up with a delicious apple pie ala mode! The place is tiny, with a limited amount of seating, but that’s what makes it so great… pouring ourselves into one of the single-sided booths, we were so excited to think, “Hey! We might be sitting right where little Elvis sat and ate some fries!” How fun is THAT? Don’t pass the place up… if you’re stopping in Tupelo for whatever reason, stop at Johnnie’s!
