Owner description: Now a museum and state historical landmark, this is one of only two California houses recognized by the U.S. Commerce Department as being haunted.

In the U.K. I’d seen several TV programmes about this place, so was really excited to be able to visit it.
It is a self guided tour, but you get given information sheets upon entry and the guides in the house were excellent. We spent a good 15-20 minutes sat in the theatre listening to one guide who had worked there for over 10 years. She is clearly passionate about the place and her passion for it was infectious! She was happy to take questions and was a mine of information.
It’s not just about ghosts, it’s historical and interesting too. I’ll remember my visit there fondly for years to come, and would recommend you visit if you are in the area.

Personally I don't think this was worth $8. It took us less than 15 min. It was great seeing the theatre room and courtroom. Easy to get through and good info sheet provided upon entering. Self-guided. Had some nice pieces.

They gave us a paper that gave some history of each room and they had a couple of people to answer questions. It wasn’t like I thought it would be. We can say we have been there, but not a lot else.

Had heard quite a lot about the Whaley House but were disappointed. Unlike most of OT's other attractions, the Whaley House charges a fee ($8) even for a self guided tour. Fair enough if there was a lot to see but there isn't. Its a relatively small building and whilst its furnished with antiques, few, if any of these are original to the house and most have to be viewed behind glass or ropes. I suppose I'd been expecting something more akin to the Winchester House of Mystery, which it certainly isn't. If you're in Old Town, much better experiences can be had for free at the Seeley Stable and the Mormon Battalion museum.

Ok, so - this is an old house, very old house, that had many uses in old San Diego, courthouse, market, theater, place to sleep, etc. When you pay, you are handed a sheet of paper with typewritten descriptions that describe the rooms, but do not accurately direct your flow through the house, causing many patrons to backtrack, and loop around and stand in the way of each other.

The workers are very nice.
