Owner description: Founded in 1916, the Zoo has been an icon in San Diego for nearly 100 years—and an absolute must-see in Southern California. Spend the day monkeying around in our tropical oasis as you visit beautiful habitats that are home to gorillas, eagles, tigers, sun bears, Asian leopards, rare reptiles, a palette of colorful birds, and more. Visit the Australian Outback to delight in our colony of 24 koalas, and travel along Panda Trek to experience giant pandas and other animals that share their bamboo forest habitat. Go back in time through Elephant Odyssey to discover what animals used to roam Southern California and see what the elephants are up to. Enjoy a guided tour on a double-decker bus or the scenic view from the Skyfari aerial tram, and dine in the peaceful surroundings of Albert's Restaurant. Discover the wonders of wildlife with animal encounters, interactive experiences, and keeper chats. A leader in animal care and conservation, the San Diego Zoo is at the heart of the San Diego experience.

“Nice Place to Visit...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2012

It's a great zoo! Lots of animals to see and admire. It's an "open" type of zoo so you can see lots of animals up close unlike other zoos.
We did find the zoo to be quite "hill-y" so be prepared to get a bit of a workout. You NEED to wear comfortable shoes to visit this attraction!
We had a great time and so did our 7 year old. This is a must-see attraction as well as SeaWorld (wrote a longer review on that one.)

“Backstage pass was pretty good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

We loved our visit to the zoo, this time of year was not busy and we walked everywhere and covered most of the zoo. I decided to add the Backstage pass so you can get close to the animals, there were only 10 people in our group and an hour and a half felt much longer. We got to feed a rhino, pet a bear cat, make a wolf howl and get close to a cheetah, zebra, hawk and a cloud leopard.

If it was busy summer crowd i'm not sure it would be the same experience but we really liked it. I didn't feel really close to the animals cos of all the laws it was as good as it gets but if you go to Australia or Asia you can see and touch animals and be closer to them for less of a cost.

We decided instead of spend the $75 plus parking at seaworld we would spend the extra $99 to do the Backstage Pass and we felt it was a good plan in the end as we saw a lot of sealife on the coast.

“Inside Look Tour a great way to see the San Diego Zoo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

When visiting the San Diego Zoo (best zoo in the world?) with a family group of 4 adults and 3 children, we booked an Inside Look tour. It was brilliant. A private tour, transported from place to place on a large golf buggy. Spoke to the zoo keepers at the various exhibits. Had a knowledgable guide. Saw lots of behind-the-scenes stuff. Even patted a Pangolin.
This 2-hour tour (actually longer than that) was great value at $69 per person. You need to book on line. I strongly recommend it.

“no koalas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

We enjoyed the zoo, but if you only have time for the zoo or sea world, I would always pick sea world. I was disappointed when we went to the zoo as the koalas were my main interest to see and they were all kept hidden for a new home. Bad timing for me. Overall a great place for the family.

“World Class”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

Awesome Awesome Awesome. We spent nearly the entire day and opted to walk the entire zoo rather than take a bus guided tour. The food at the park was great and the staff was extremely helpful.
