Great place to take children and let them enjoy the outdoors. Lovely walking trails. Part of the Cabrillo Monument Park.

This area is especially suited for people who can walk easily on steep trails and paths. However, the view from just the light house and the overlooks it well worth the drive and these areas are easily accessed and even for handicap. Free parking and visitors center. From there one can drive down to the lower parking lots where you can climb the Clift areas and get into the tide pools on low tide. Fabulous views of downtown San Diego, Coronado Island, the bay and of course the Pacific Ocean. Don't miss this. We spent several hours walking around and packed a picnic lunch as there is no food available in the area.

Situated near the end of Point Loma peninsula, west and south of the San Diego airport, is a fairly long drive from most tourist sites. It's worth a visit both for the history and views. Further, on the way to the Lighthouse, you pass through a National Monument, a Navy installation, and by an exquisitely maintained--but almost unknown--National Cemetery with thousands of graves neatly arranged and marked with white headstones.

Neither the Old Point Loma Lighthouse nor the various viewing overlooks are far from the parking area, and various explanatory boards give interesting information about the sites and history. Quite often Navy ships pass by on their way to or from one of the San Diego Navy installations in the Bay.

This lighthouse is very unique in that it is in Cabrillo state park. It sits atop the bluff that overlooks San Diego harbor. The house itself is open accept for the top floor. It is a small home that has original furniture and layout as it was in past years. On the grounds beside the house is a building that provides the history and also a small garden. Surrounding the building are trails that can be used so bring comfortable shoes and snacks if you plan to use.

Even in January it was a warm and beautiful day out by the lighthouse. Not much happening on the ocean side but the harbor was very busy with ships and boats going in and out. There were beautiful views of the harbor, the city and the surrounding area.
