Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to different areas of our two historic tenement buildings or neighborhood.

We took the Hard Times Tour last week and found it to be superb. We were with our kids ages 7 and 10. It was enlightening to experience the preserved tenement. Our tour leader was thoughtful, had deep knowledge and helped us get a bigger understanding of what life was like on these cramped tight streets. We emerged grateful that we made time to take this tour which is really an opportunity to appreciate the history of New York from a sociological and anthropological perspective.

This is a smallish museum that shows how people used to live in the early days of the industrialization of NYC and immigration. People still do live like that, only that they are termed "low income", etc. The place is worth a stop if you are interested in that dynamic of NYC's history

It sounded so interesting, a museum of tenement life and the immigrant experience, recreating actual rooms, workshops, etc - but beware! It's over-priced, $25 each for every tour, there's very little to see, and our guide (the Shop Tour) was appalling - she spent most of the time patronising us with obvious facts and telling us about herself! If you're in the area, it's worth visiting the shop and watching the (free) introductory film - but go no further. What a shame.

We took two tours. The first was a walking tour which focused not just on the Tenement buildings and their associated history but also subsequent architectural developments. The second was the Hard Times tour which provided a visit to the Tenement building in Orchard Street and provided information about two of the families who lived there. Both tours were very interesting and the theme of the tours is central to the New York immigration story. I would therefore recommend a visit to the museum, ideally taking both a walking tour and a property tour (there are a number of alternative options). If time is limited, a film can be watched in the visitor centre.

I forgot to book a tour before we came so I got up earlier that the rest of my family and waited for the museum shop to open at 10. I think the first tour everyday is unreserved so if you get there early you can get tickets. Otherwise all that was available were walking tours ( no buildings). This tour was”shop life” and while I did not love it as much as a previous tour we did several years ago of an actual apartment, it did give a feel for the families. It also talked about the space through the 1970s which was very different from the homes which closed in the 30s.
