“One-bedroom Suite Review”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

My husband, my 10-year old daughter and myself stayed at the Jewell for 7 nights and overall I think this is a great hotel, especially since we booked very early and got a fantastic price. The rooms are very modern and have nice touches such as an Iphone doc. We had a kitchenette which was great to storing basic supplies such as juice and left-overs and the cleaning staff were excellent. We also found it very quiet. I never heard people in adjacent rooms or really any noise except for noise outside when we had the windows open.

There were a few little issues that I thought I would point out with the one-bedroom suite. One is that the "bedroom" is separated from the rest of the room but a sliding door that doesn't completely close off so there isn't total privacy (if that's an issue for you). Also, the door is make of an opaque glass as is the door to the bathroom so when my husband had to get up early for his meetings, this meant light went straight from the bathroom to the bedroom. We also found the AC unit to be quite loud and because it was right by the bed, tended to blow on us quite a bit. We eventually just turned it off and opened the window which generally worked okay.

I staid here for a couple of night last January on a business trip and I was really happy with this choice.
The hotel is in a great location and just 1 block from my meeting place.
It looks like brand new so I assume this is a new or a just renovated hotel.
The price was also very competitive.
I really enjoy my stay even though bedding was not superb.
Please take into account that rooms are SMALL but this is standard in NYC.
Another advice: Don't let them for any reason assigned you a room in the last floor (you have to switch elevators).
The only possible complaint is that they do not explain carefully or indicate more clearly that the elevator WORKS ONLY IF YOU INSERT YOUR ROOM CARD in a small slot the elevators have.

To me, the two biggest things the Jewel has going for it are location and price. Now, pretty much any hotel in Midtown between, say, Third and Eighth Aves is going to offer easy access for many of the things most tourists want to see. But the Jewel's proximity to Rockefeller Center and Fifth Ave. shopping makes it even more appealing, and there isn't a ton of traffic noise at night, unlike places closer to Times Square. As for price, I got an upgraded room for $209/night with my AAA discount. That is really hard to beat.

By American standards, the proportions of the place are tiny. Were I claustro- or crowd-phobic, I wouldn't want to spend too much time in their itty bitty lobby during 3 pm check-in. Even the hallways feel small. By Manhattan standards, these dimensions aren't unusual, and I suspect that the many, many Europeans who stay here aren't phased by it at all.

Because of the great rate, I chose a "superior" room, which offered a bit more space. Granted, the bathroom is still very small, but the rest of the room was comfortable (again, especially when compared with nearby hotels at this price point). Another advantage to springing for a bigger room is that having the bed farther away from the door probably meant a quieter night sleep for me. The room itself was pleasing and contemporary... nothing particularly remarkable, but clean, aesthetically appealing and comfortable. I did notice that the TV didn’t have the greatest picture, but then again, being holed up in one’s hotel room is not the best way to spend time in New York City! The Jewel is a very good place to stay.

I highly recommend the Jewel. The location is excellent. It's close to all midtown attractions and far enough away from Times Square and 5th Avenue to not be loud at night. There is an abundance of bars and restaurants nearby. Plenty of coffee and pastry shops as well, for when it's cold and you need to warm up. They offer free bottled water which came in handy and have printers for guests, so you can print your tickets and boarding passes. The rooms were European sized, but very comfortable and clean. I would not consider this property basic, the rooms were well decorated and with more amenities and quality than a basic hotel would offer. Location and quality are superb, and the price fantastic!
