Variety of small dishes gives you a taste of different aspects of Balkan food. Could have used even more food. Annoyingly had to leave the door open in the winter to ventilate the kitchen. Tables and chairs are small and they are crammed together. But totally worth it.

For anybody who loves food from the Balkans this is a great spot. I had the ajvar, sopska salata, cevapi, burek sa sirom and it was all very good. Almost like being in Skopje. Good selection of wine including Macedonian and Croatian.

Restaurants in and immediately adjacent to Time Square are expensive and often part of a large conglomerate of standardized menus. Over lunch a couple of natives clued us into Balkanika which is off 47th St. on 9th Avenue (only two long blocks from Time Square). This is the Hell's Kitchen area of NYC and is primarily residential. The shops and restaurants here primarily serve the local residents. My wife and I had an early pre-theater dinner here. We arrived at about 6:15 and there were many tables available (this was to change quickly and by the time we left most of the tables were filled or had "reserved" signs on them). The waitress said it was happy hour (which lasts from 5pm to 8pm). Drinks were $5 each. We ordered the Mezes (appetizer) sampler of all ten of their appetizers for $25. We were going to order more later, but the two of us couldn't even finish this dish. We also ordered two drinks. My margarita was one of the best I've had in a restaurant and all ten of the appetizers were great. If we can find the time on this visit we will be going back to try some of the other dishes. Dinner for two with two drinks totaled $38 before tip.

This Balkan bistro is that rare creature, an affordable, relaxing restaurant in the theatre district. Serving a tasty mix of Mediterranean tapas---savory dips, spinach and cheese pastries, succulent kebabs---and appealing wines from Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey--this cheerful spot attracts actors, dancers, and other locals, as well as savvy travelers looking for a good deal pre or post-curtain. An actor pal recommended the place, and we liked it so much we came back with a gang to celebrate a birthday. They couldn't have been nicer!
