We booked Empire Diner on a Saturday night for 9:00. When we arrived the place was humming with good energy. It has just re-opened after an extensive renovation. They did a bang up job. Clean and bright, fully insulated for cool nights and yet retaining its historical diner charm.

The do full breakfasts and a lot of their lunch and dinner options fall into the comfort category. We started with a wedge salad and followed that with a burger, hanger steak and cauliflower puree on the side. We enjoyed all the dishes. They were simple, and as I say: comforting. Along with three dark lager and a bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir our bill before tip was $178.

Service was provided by Bernard who was professional and a very warm welcome at the door by the evenings host Jeremy.

Do not expect any exotic culinary adventures at Empire. That is not what they are aiming for. It is honest diner food well prepared in comfortable surroundings.

We were seated near the bar and every so often there was a strong smell of chlorox that would last for a minute or two. Our table was also near the front door on a cold night and whenever the door opened a cold gust of air came our way.
I ordered a bottle of wine but when it arrived I noticed it was not the same vintage as the one listed on the menu so the waiter went to look for the correct one and 15 minutes later he said they didn’t have it! Then when we ordered a second bottle of the same wine the waiter was about to start pouring it into our glasses that still had wine from the first bottle in the. I had to stop him and ask to taste the second wine in a new glass to make sure it wasn’t flawed.
Some of the food was very good (the biscuits they serve when you order and my stracciatella was yummy) but other dishes just ok (the sea bass and the chicken). Also the waiter didn’t know what was in one of the dishes we asked about so he just made something up (whoever heard of seeds from Brussels sprouts!) then another waiter came by and told us what it was (mustard seeds).
Too many negatives to return here despite the cool vibe.

The service was good at first. Food was okay but rather bland. Wouldn't recommend - lots of other places to choose from in New York.

Great little diner in Chelsea, loved the decor and the ambience. Food was very good, not a huge amount of it considering it's in New York but it was definitely a case of quality of quantity - very happy with our lunch!

Cozy little place to dine - the lighting glows. It was a bitterly cold night and even the added entry way did little to keep out the cold when anyone entered or exited. To make up for it a super charged heater kicked on. I had the Mac n cheese which was okay. Another at the table had the pretzel coated fried chicken which was a lot of chicken served with some pickled vegetables - so this person was not so pleased with the meal. Maybe instead of the pickles some more traditional sides? The other diner had two apps - which he enjoyed. Service was exceptional. The burgers coming out of the kitchens looked pretty incredible - I was really wishing they had a veggie burger on the menu. I typically don't order Mac n cheese but with extreme cold figured a comfort food was in order. This was a $100 bill with tip and only one alcoholic drink so don't expect a "diner" tab.
