We just ate a superb meal here. We ave had unagi (freshwater eel) and this was betterhan any we had in Tokyo or Kyoto. The California roll was large and succulent. Service was quick and attentive. Very reasonably priced.

Don't expect red carpets, soft lighting or sofas. This place is rustic as hell, full of atmosphere and jam packed! The food is superb and that is what matters. An experience !

If you find yourself if this neighborhood, avoid much of the student-y, cheap shack of subpar food and find your way to this place. You won't be disappointed!

This place is wonderful though --- if you are looking for just great traditional sushi and not all of the super junked up rolls. You won't find truffle oil here.

What's to cheer:
1. The major only downside is there is a wait, particularly on a Friday or Saturday
2. It's not the least expensive option

Well hidden in the west village in an anonymous building that you could recognize just by the line waiting outside for a table. Inside a small rather dingy room crowded with tables to fit as many people as they can ( Fire Marshall would have an infarct). But everything else is delicious. The food prepared by a Japanese old guy with over 30 years of experience in preparing typical Japanese food that you would find in Tokyo rather then New York. Now coming to Tomoe sushi you have to have an open mind and not try to compare with sushi Yasuda or Nakazawa were you would get the omakashe menu prepared by a trained chef at 6 or 7 times higher price. This is again more of a casual place, more of your neighborhood restaurant with dishes learned from an older grandmother rather then a fancy cuisine school.
