Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

The west side location is in a small storefront down a few stair. The place is small, the cookies are fabulous. The lines are sometimes long, particularly after school and on week-ends. It's a little like being a kid all over again. The cookies are almost cake like-I mean that in a positive way. It's the kind of place to grab and go. Some of the best cookies I have eaten.

Discovered this place back in 1996 when I lived in the neighborhood and knew it was something special then. I'm a Cookie Monster, so I can vouch for the incredible chocolate walnut cookies, scrumptious peanut butter cookies, and amazing oatmeal cookies. Nowadays I see lines that extend up the steps and down a few doors -- it's worth the wait!

I love this place. They have three things I love: chocolate chip cookies (scrumptious), they have this chocolate brioche (out of this world), and oatmeal raisin scones (fantastic). You'll be happy you tried any (or ALL) of these tasty morsels. There is often a line outside the door, but can you blame them? People love a good thing!

These cookies are amazing. They smell divine- like cookie perfume. Don't pass these up. They are worth breaking your diet over!

This place has the best cookies. Oatmeal raisin is amazing. They are huge and great to be shared amongst friends. Nice to buy for an event or special occasion.
