This aging bastion of once grand hotel experiences is much past it's prime. The Grand Dame of high end NY hotels has retained the high prices for which she may have once qualified. How ever the aged dowager of the NY luxury hotel scene is long past her prime and in significant need of an up date. The service is adequate, the facilities aged and declining and the pricing reflective of a time long past for this once noble establishment.

The lineage is hear. On the other hand, lineage simply is since it can't be changed retroactively. Certainly the location and the structure are a reminder of the importance of the place. But the Waldorf is like a lady or a gentleman of a certain age - best seen through the lens of nostalgia. Two of us were in town for The Pennsylvania Society dinner, held here as always, and we decided to book here as well for the convenience. We also were curious to see if the new ownership was making its mark. The first thing we discovered is that the Diamond check in lounge is closed on weekends. The fellow who intercepted us said this was recent and no one knew why; he also said that staffing had been cut from two to one when it was open. Hmm. So we checked in at regular reception, which was kind enough to find us rooms, albeit not what we'd reserved. Still, it was far better than the chaos that it ordinary check in, as the desk clerk knowingly confided (true, from past experience). The rooms were modestly sized, comfortably adequate by NY standards, and well-furnished for any decade from the 30s through the 60s. They could use a facelift. The HVAC is, well, quaint, but the windows open to let in cool air. Those prone to hypothermia, however, will be very comfortable. We had lunch in Peacock Alley, which was nice enough, although not up to The Caledonian in Edinburgh, but as we'd been given coupons upon check in that covered a glass of wine each. I still give it four stars because 1) it is an institution and 2) it could be great again. I hope it becomes great again, but we'll see.

This hotel is a grand old lady. The public areas are beautiful. Elegant and impressive. The bedrooms are a little worn but really comfortable and well equipped. I would definitely stay here again. The service is flawless and professional.

we were given a king superior on the 15th floor. We loved the room. If there was any issue it was that the water pressure was not very much and the water was soft, which made rinsing off taking a little longer. The bed was so comfortable. The closet well equipped w space, 2 bathrobes and iron and ironing board. We got 2 complimentary water bottles from Carlo at check-in. When we were charged for them , we called, and Tim took that off the bill.
I would advise to check your bill at the end of your stay.
The view was great from the window. Anyone complaining about this hotel has. It stayed in other hotels in NY. This was a large, super comfortable room compared to what one finds in NY! We loved it!!
We had super friendly staff from Reception (Carlo) to Tim ( front desk) to Concierge, to Tours. Classic hotel, icon of NY. Why stay anywhere else??? I mean, come on! Chain hotels are the same all over the US. This is a no- brainer. We loved it!!!

Bar the Plaza I can think of no better known hotel in New York. It's history and charm were key reasons why I selected the hotel for a recent trip to New York. Both were in good supply and among the highlights of the hotel, along with the sheer size of the 14th floor Signature Suite that I purchased, some 900 sq ft, and the lovely view down Park Ave. Unfortunately, the experience was continually tarnished by small defects and choices by the hotel management and the WA just is not on pace with the current standards in luxury hotels.

Firstly, check in was slow, with a long queue (that was barely adhered to by guests or staff because it is so poorly marked) and extensive waiting while the front desk battled with a malfunctioning computer and frequent trips out the back. We were messaged at 3.30 that our room was ready, however, our arrival in the room some 15 minutes after startled housekeeping who were not finished making the bed! The room was large and well-appointed, though clearly fading and in need of a refurbishment. After arriving in the room and exploring it's appointments disappointment set in, despite the price paid for the room the WA is quite keen to extract as much as possible from its guests, with expensive in-room Wifi (contrary to the guest book, which tells you that any Wifi is not associated with the WA), a sub-standard TV service that puts pay per view front and centre, and a room service that requires a room charge (standard) and a gratuity that includes an administration fee. I'm not sure why an administration fee and a room charge is needed, but it, and the general high cost of all of the hotel's services cheapened the experience and made me feel like I was being nickeled and dimed. Further, the hotel is missing things like in room VoIP that I consider to be mandatory of luxury hotels given the standards set by competitors in this price point.

I paid $800 a night for the room, which is why I have given it two stars. At the full $1200 rack rate it would undoubtedly have been one. If you can get a Signature Suite for less than I then it is an experience and my rating would go up commensurately, at $400 a night it'd be a 5 star experience. But, it isn't. And as such I just don't think it offers value for money.
