“A little disappointing”

The Watermen's Museum
Reviewed 19 October 2016 via mobile

We wanted to visit because this place was listed in the AAA Tour Guide book, but we found it to be limited. One advantage is the low admission fee, but we had no tour guides or anyone to provide expert opinion. My dad did enjoy talking to the volunteer working on one of the small model ships that are exhibited in the small gallery, but the information we saw here was conveyed MUCH better and more thoroughly at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News.

We recently took our Rotary Club on a "field trip" to the Watermen's Museum and were unanimously impressed. Mike the museum director was very knowledgeable and excited about the breadth of history related to "people who work on the water". We covered everybody from the Powhatan Indians to pirates to Cornwallis to fishermen to the US Coast Guard. The museum is very hands-on and would be a great visit for teachers with school kids. They have a ship model builder working on-site, plus other activities like boat repair, folk music, story slams, and swing dancing.

The museum has a lot of history...lots of model boats and displays. The host of the museum was very nice and gave us a guided tour as we went from one room to another, and she showed us a video on the seafood industry years ago and how it has progressed.
