I chose the Tamarack Lodge as my accommodations for my first try at cross country skiing. The lodge and cabins are within walking or skiing distance of the Nordic Ski center office. I was able to rent equipment and take lessons without driving anywhere else. The snow level was historical, so you did have to trudge up the hills and piles on your on ( which may have been too much for the unprepared). But I loved it! Tamarack is more distance from the Mammoth Village center, but only a 7-10 minute drive, to get to places in town for the evening. My cabin was a studio rustic style, which was just right and affordable - and cozy and warm. I also occasionally used the lodge for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff was always friendly, even though the snow levels were challenging for them as well.

The cabins were in the woods, not in a parking lot. A wilderness experience.

I'll be back!

We are regular visitors to Tamarack and often have issues with the lodging that we brush aside due to it's spectacular location. Things like poor/lack of weather stripping on doors, shabby furniture in the "historic" cabins. However, our last visit with a check-in on Feb 26,had an issue that could not be ignored. We knew there was a large snowpack and figured the cabins would be very buried. What we had no way of knowing was the cabin they sold to us was completely buried except for the front door. All windows were enclosed with walls of snow as was the second exit door off the "den", Further inspection revealed the snow load on the roof was so large and deep we could not tell if there was enough clearance on the roof vents allowing for safe air intake/ventilation. There was zero natural light. It was tomb like. If you ever wondered what it must be like to be buried in an avalanche make sure you ask for cabin 21. Actually, all of the smaller cabins were completely buried like this. I requested a cabin change and told they were sold out. They offered to move us to another property owned by Mammoth Mountain but after two hours of waiting and more snowfall expected that evening i was eager to get my lodging taken care of; especially after my 5 hour drive. I went to the front desk to inform them I had secured my own lodging and requested a refund. They balked. I was told he had to "speak with the manager". No Sir, you do not. You cannot sell a room that is unsafe to sleep in with only one way in/out. But guess what? When I called The Town of Mammoth Lakes Building Dept. to see if there was a code violation I was told lodging falls under a different category and they can indeed sell a room/cabin like that for transient occupancy. But here is my question: Just because you can, should you? At a minimum inform your guests of the situation during booking so they can decide if they can sleep being buried by snow with no way to see out any windows, no natural light/ventilation. I would have been afraid to cook or run the propane fireplace for fear the vents on the roof were inadequate. An employee offered to dig out a second exit. Do not insult my intelligence; the snow is now so compacted you need a backhoe to dig this place out.
Also, the cornice over the front door had only been partially removed and presented another hazard.Pretty disgusted with this whole experience and will never be staying there again. Be warned. I have photos as well. Don't even get me started on the restaurant. We had Christmas dinner there on a previous visit. My husband is a vegetarian and we were assured there would be vegetarian options. There were. It was a few baby rutabages and mini carrots. Seriously, a plate of vegetables! Off the list. Such a shame. The location of Tamarack is second to none but their total lack of concern for the paying customer is too much. I have repeatedly filled out the surveys Mammoth Resorts sends via email following all my visits and have aired my concerns on those surveys. They have chosen to never respond so they leave me with only this forum as a voice.

Room tip: make sure they have done adequate snow removal to ensure safe ingress/egress and removed overhanging cornices at such areas.

Dear Junitmb,

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your experience with our resort. While we were happy to chose to stay with us again, I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations with service and experience and that you decided not to stay. We have experienced a massive amount of snow since January 1st (over 450"), which has left our historic cabins surrounded in snow, but with that being said we have kept them perfectly safe for occupancy. We have continued to clear snow to keep windows free, though the day you arrived was just after a storm and were in the process of getting to all of our cabins, I'm sorry we hadn't completed your cabin yet.

Also, we will take your additional feedback seriously, especially regarding informing guests of our current conditions. While the amount of snow we have received has been featured throughout numerous publications and tv channels in CA, as well as on Good Morning America, we can certainly look to contact guests directly regarding changing conditions.

Warm Regards,

I stayed in the main lodge which is very rustic and dark in the winter. Jazz pianist Friday and Saturday, Joe, and brought in his friend harmonica player on Saturday. The joint hops. Sherry, one of the front desk attendees drove me to town during a blizzard. Very kind and we had a nice chat, The staff is amazing,

My only quibble, and the reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars is transportation. I didn't have a car, the Orange Lime to Tamarack stops at 5 and you can't get a cab. Seriously, they won't even answer. Waited an hour, called Juniper Springs (sister property) and Timon picked me up.

Old School lodging with bathrooms down the hall. Decadent, delicious food in their wonderful dining room. Fine wines. Cool lobby and fireplace where friends meet, new and old. Definitely book here again.

Dear Sportinggoodusa,

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your recent experience with Tamarack Lodge. I certainly appreciate the thorough feedback and am glad you had a great experience over the weekend, taking in Joe Gray Jr. and with your interactions with the staff. Also, we are currently working with our sister properties to come up with a solution to the evening transportation challenge. We hope you can return again soon.

We stay here regularly and the cabins and staff are always first rate. The location to xc ski is the best in the state, set tracks around the lakes are very well groomed with big sno cats. The altitude is high so the snow is usually great. The staff always goes out of their way to be helpful, and the cabins are really nice, great views from the large windows. And you can literally xc ski from your front door to the ski hut and trails. Tuesday and Wednesday are discount days for trail passes! Best vacation spot in Mammoth. Also for downhill skiing the free busses stop here.

Room tip: The Deluxe cabins are well worth the money!

We stay at Tamarack Lodge Resort any chance we get. One of our favorite places . We normally rent a cabin that faces the lakes. Sitting on the porch in the morning having coffee is wonderful. Beware of bears as we normally see one each trip. If you can, time your trip for early October to see the leaves change in The Sierra. If you are lucky you will get to see the first snowfall of the season and the first fire in the lodge fireplace. We have lucked out twice.
A must visit when in California.
