Review of Oregon Film Museum

Oregon Film Museum
Ranked #25 of 56 things to do in Astoria

The family admission was $15 for entering the old county jail that has been converted into a museum (loosely using that word). Most of the area is devoted to making your own short videos of older film scenes. We encountered many technical errors during our filming sessions and later again when attempting to email the clips home. For those hoping to see actual movie memorabilia, the museum is extremely light on these artifacts. Overall, we stayed maybe twenty minutes, and even that felt like more than enough time.

This place is well worth the low price of admission of $6.00 per adult and 2.00 child. It's not a vast expansive building for sure, but what it has in it is fun and interesting. You learn about several films filmed in Oregon, and they have props and replica props on display from some of those films. They have a fun little interactive experience where you can film yourself doing scenes inspired by some of the films, complete with green screen. The green screen backgrounds could be improved but I can't complain for the low cost of admission. I will say the door with the cut out where you can place your head through is a bit cheesy. I know they are going for "The Shining" where Jack sticks his head through the broken door, but they really should make the door look broken, even if the broken piece is on a hinge. The cut out hole they have now is a bit corny. This place admittedly has more stuff about The Goonies than it does other films, but it's still a fun experience. I did dress up as Jake Fratelli and Brand from The Goonies while visiting and got some fun photos you can see in this review. I don't understand why people complained in earlier reviews about the admission price. The admission price is reasonable and just right for the experience in my opinion. This isn't the Smithsonian, it's a fun film museum. I actually visited twice when in Astoria. :) The gift shop is full of fun items and shirts to purchase as well. Parking is free on the streets around the museum. One thing I wish they would add is admission to the second floor. Just more information on the history of the building itself would be welcomed. It was used in the film The Goonies, but I'm sure the building itself has a fun history of it's own just waiting to be told. I think they could incorporate that into the experience. Oh! If you want to see more than just one museum for a lower bundled price you can pay to get a bundle admission at this museum. Ask at the admissions counter! It's a good deal! Over all a fun experience, and if you are in town you should go!

Save your money and do something else. Not worth it. Not really a museum, mostly just a smattering of goonies stuff left over from the film maybe. A rip off.

I had good time in this tiny museum. That’s also because I’m a BIG Goonies fan so just being in Astoria and visiting some of the actual sites where it was filmed made it even more enjoyable. Please don’t come here expecting much but instead, make the most of it! There’s also a room where you can film mini movie clips which was fun. All in all, if you’re a goonies fan, this is definitely one stop to check out!

Very interesting museum. If you like, you can have a movie made and they put it on a DVD so that you can show it at home.
