We celebrated a milestone with friends and family at this casually elegant restaurant in Brookline. The table was set up for our party of 12 when we arrived and a good meal of shared delicacies were enjoyed in a quiet setting where we could visit together. The saki selections and green teas were excellent to wash down the variety of tasty dishes we ordered. The staff was very attentive and kind.

A good barometer of authenticity and quality is the one given by Japanese expats and visitors and in this sense Shiki came up frequently as good choice. The food both the sushi and especially the non the sushi selection was very good and the service was friendly and attentive although a little overwhelmed at times. The sake selection was excellent for such a small unassuming place. If you are going on a weekend make sure you call to reserve as it gets busy and we saw quite a few people waiting.

The most authentic Japanese restaurant in Boston! The food here is sooooo good and fresh all the time. Closest real Japanese food experience in Boston. The kaiseki sets, hokkaido don (sea urchin, crab meat and scallops) is my favorite. But let's be real, everything is good here and worth trying.

My wife and I have been frequenting Shiki since it opened. For those unfamiliar with Shiki, this is not a 'sushi and beer place'. The non-sushi menu is actually more interesting and the range of quality sake's is eye-opening.

Anyhow, when we came here in Feb, we suspected there was a change in ownership. There appeared to be a wholesale turnover in staff. Likewise, they seemed unfamiliar with the menu items. Moreover, overall service levels had declined subtly and the meal we ordered was lacking the rich flavors we were used to.

We came back again in late March for a friend's birthday dinner, and were a little worried as to what to expect. Fortunately, the Shiki we had learned to love appeared to be back and in (generally) good form.

Food was superb. We had the ochazuke (salmon, plum and konbu), followed with a range of specials - eg, mackarel, black cod [highly recommended], nasu dengaku (with miso) - all excellent. We paired these with a tokkuri of sake (cold) that our waitress suggested which was just perfect.

Service though was spotty. Shiki was full on the Sunday night that we came (~6:30pm). We were seated quickly but it took 15 min plus for the menu to arrive. They also forgot to deliver one dish that we had ordered, and billed us for it nonetheless. Presumably, these are temporary issues that can get resolved.

We will of course come back when we can. The food is just too good to pass up, and we are hopeful that the service levels will improve.

We had dinner here a while back for the first time. The menu is both traditional and interesting. Good for sushi lovers and for other dishes. We will return again and again.

Frequented by many Japanese and other Asians, including children.

Prices are moderate. Best to make a reservation as lines can be long. Easily accessed by bus and train to Coolidge Corner.
