One night spent here on Sri Lankan tour, maybe as we were only here for one night, we drew the short straw, we got a room in the bowels of the hotel which was ok and had the biggest bed we had ever seen, but the old musty smell in the connecting corridors was quite overpowering, time for a refurbishment. Meal in the resteraunt was good with great fruit animal models!

Like an earlier reviewer we stayed here as part of a tour and only for one night. This was the one hotel that our of five we were really diappointed in. If the food had been good we may have viewed other things as quaint; such as the bar man who had several attempts at our order or the lack of a hairdryer and safe.
However, this was the worst food of our holiday and I can only assume that the tour companies continue to use at as there is nothing else in the area.
One of our party was particularly looking forward to the hot water bottle she had read so much about but because several of us refused the evening service as we were getting ready for dinner the result was no hot water bottles. In a hotel that felt damp these would have been welcome.

We had 2 nights here on a tour. You have to embrace the experience and just go with it. It reminded us of an old style hotel. Fantastic service, great staff, good food, and a cosy atmosphere. Yes the rooms are a bit 'creaky', you will need blankets and the hot water bottles were a lovely surprise. The evening entertainment is bordering on the hilarious, but order a gin and join in. You can walk into town its only about a 5 min walk to the main shopping area. We were not bothered or hassled and the covered food market is a great visit.

Don't believe the Lonely Panet review of this hotel. We think the reviewer did not even visit .This hotel needs to have a major renovation. The door to our room was not hung correctly and there was a wide gap at the side and bottom. The noise was a major problem. The carpets are threadbare, the sheets were like sandpaper ,complete with a hole and the towels had seen better days . The whole place needs redecorating. The cover on the couch in the room was torn and the whole place needed some painting. Not to mention the decorating, which was basically op shop furniture painted white with
amaturish craft type material abstracs framed on the walls. The damp smell was also very off putting.
It was impossible to shower without significant water going all over the floor. Service was patchy, the wrong main course was delivered at dinner and while the staff tried hard
it was a loosing battle.

You will either love it or hate it – we loved it! This is not quite what you might expect in 2010 but providing you prepare yourself for a step back in time to the colonial period you will have a great time. A long sweeping driveway leads you up through the attractive gardens to the main entrance. Steps and a covered walkway lead you to the reception and the ground floor of the hotel. Twists and turns and many hallways and small lounges add real character to this hotel. The wood panelled billiard room and attractive (internal) dining room add to the quirky charml. Afternoon tea or snacks in the garden are essential – then go and sit in one of the gardens for awhile to soak up the sun. Dinner was excellent, smallish portions but excellently prepared and presented. Wine in Sri Lanka is comparatively expensive but the wine list at St Andrews will certainly tempt even the most cost conscious traveller to try a bottle. Oh yes, pre and post dinner drinks in the bar are essential if you want to soak up some of the atmosphere. Take a stroll into the nearby town to see the 'British' Post Office, Catholic Church and many smilling faces. Nights can be a little cool in the hill country so don't be surprised if you find hot water bottle in your bed when you return to your room after dinner!
