As you drive into the hotel the gardens are fantastic they call it little England and it really does feel that way. The hotel looks nice from the outside but in there is is very dark and old. We were greated with a cup of soup which made us laugh but yet was a nice welcome. Our room was in the family side and was clean and looked like it had been recently decorated but other guests we got talking to in the other wing of the hotel said their rooms were very very old and dated. It was very noisy at night as the doors to the rooms dont really fit the frame and you could hear tv's and talking from other rooms. It was lovely though to get woke up in the morning at 5am (early i know but worth it) to the sound of the locals praying at the temple. The food was a set meal which at first i wasn't to happy with as im a bit of a fussy eater but i was wrong it was fantastic it was what you would expect at a 5 star hotel, would highly recomend it. You can walk into the local town if you want to see culture its about a 5 min walk its a very busy place. Personally i would just go back for the food and gardens but the hotel really needs some work.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a tour and were very disappointed after staying at lovely hotels previously on the tour. Yes, it looks good from the outside with the colonial frontage and the lovely gardens, but it was SO dark and depressing and the rooms were cold, very basic and inadequate. The shower overflowed all over the bathroom because they have not been built in correctly, we were give twin beds pushed together that were hardly bigger than cots and uncomfortable and the rooms were very cold with inadequate bedding. Old towels, worn carpets and lack of good lighting everywhere did nothing to make us feel any less depressed about the place.

The dining room which had no natural light was extremely dark and the bar/sitting room had grafitti over the walls which was encouraged by the staff looking for visitors comments by providing them with felt tip to write with! What a shame that this hotel which could be so lovely has been allowed to deteriorate to this level! The staff are friendly and willing and the food is absolutely gorgeous with professional waiters and chefs who would grace any London hotel. If this is the management company's idea of excellent English accommodation, I feel ashamed.

One night spent here on Sri Lankan tour, maybe as we were only here for one night, we drew the short straw, we got a room in the bowels of the hotel which was ok and had the biggest bed we had ever seen, but the old musty smell in the connecting corridors was quite overpowering, time for a refurbishment. Meal in the resteraunt was good with great fruit animal models!

Like an earlier reviewer we stayed here as part of a tour and only for one night. This was the one hotel that our of five we were really diappointed in. If the food had been good we may have viewed other things as quaint; such as the bar man who had several attempts at our order or the lack of a hairdryer and safe.
However, this was the worst food of our holiday and I can only assume that the tour companies continue to use at as there is nothing else in the area.
One of our party was particularly looking forward to the hot water bottle she had read so much about but because several of us refused the evening service as we were getting ready for dinner the result was no hot water bottles. In a hotel that felt damp these would have been welcome.

We had 2 nights here on a tour. You have to embrace the experience and just go with it. It reminded us of an old style hotel. Fantastic service, great staff, good food, and a cosy atmosphere. Yes the rooms are a bit 'creaky', you will need blankets and the hot water bottles were a lovely surprise. The evening entertainment is bordering on the hilarious, but order a gin and join in. You can walk into town its only about a 5 min walk to the main shopping area. We were not bothered or hassled and the covered food market is a great visit.
