We had a lovely stay at the Pontchartrain! Perfect setting for mid-thirties age group that still likes to indulge in the local restaurant scene and imbibe in a few drinks with much to do within walking distance (Magazine St., Commander’s Palace and Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, mansions of Garden District) and other options just a short Uber ride or streetcar/walk away (French Quarter, CBD, Uptown, Frenchmen St). If street noise bothers you, request a higher floor. Rooftop bar was a must-see! If we return to NOLA in the future, we would definitely stay here again!

This is a great old hotel, but it could be greater. Yes, it underwent a recent, albeit partial renovation, but it still needs more work (details to follow).

Pros: Great location at the edge of the Garden District and the St.Charles trolley stops right across the street. The reception staff was very friendly and accommodating. And then there's that nostalgic charm that can't be replicated in chain hotels. In spite of being a relatively large hotel, on a busy street, and with lots of non-guest revelers at the roof top Tin Roof bar, it was relatively quiet at night.

You can get a good cup of coffee and a light breakfast in the Silver Thatch coffee shop on the ground floor.

Cons:

The renovation was largely cosmetic; yes, they gutted and renovated the bathrooms, added a sprinkler system and smoke alarms to bring up to code, but they didn't bother to replace the 1927-era windows with energy-efficient multi-pane windows that would have been more energy efficient and reduced outside noise. The frosted glass bathroom window in my room had paint splatters on it and looked horrible (see pictures). Also note that the old windows are painted shut with 91years worth of white paint. As other reviewers have pointed out the elevator is a relic; it creaks and groans up and down, so hopefully the owners have had it inspected for safety.

Parking is very expensive at $30 a night.

There is no coffee maker in the room, nor is there any complimentary bottled water, which is pretty much an industry standard, only a $7.00 bottle of Fiji water. Fortunately the NOLA tap water isn't bad at all.

The web site gallery only shows the upscale room bathrooms, i.e., celadon subway tiled walk-in showers with frameless glass partitions. However, the Clio kings are a mixed bag; some have walk-in showers, albeit with a shower curtain and generic beige tiles with mismatched grout, while other Clio rooms have bath tubs that are so old that Huey Long would have recognized them.

As some reviewers have pointed out, the wall decor is really weird, e.g., a small print over the king-sized headboard and reproduction prints scattered around on the walls attempting to achieve a shabby-chic NOLA vibe (it doesn't work).

In my room they placed a made-in-China, one size fits all credenza for the TV and mini bar that is way too long for the space and the end sticks out about six inches into the bathroom doorway; the sharp edge on the corner of the glass top should be a safety concern of the management.

All in all I enjoyed my stay, but this grand dame has a lot of warts that I would like to see get addressed.

The Pontchartrain is a great hotel in a pleasant, quieter part of the city. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful. And the rooftop bar, Hot Tin, should not be missed. A great vibe with unsurpassed views of the city.

It was wonderful to return to this lovely hotel. The roof top bar had a great view. Joe was a friendly bartender. Great place for gathering at the end of the day. Old collections are interesting. The Pontchartrain is welcomed old school.

My wife and I decided to go spend a few days in New Orleans after being away for 30+ years. We previously had stayed at the Pontchartrain and liked the location. It is not in the Quarter but in the Garden District. The Quarter is OK to visit but we prefer the Garden. The Pontchartrain is an old hotel that is newly redecorated with taste and historical charm. It has the best roof top bar in the city. Jerry, the Manager was very helpful. Michael, the Concierge, is extremely helpful frequently anticipating what we needed before we even asked. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and visited another luxury hotel where we had had our reception, the years had not been kind to that hotel and we were glad we chose the Ponchartrain. We are already talking about visiting again and staying at the Ponchartrain.

Room Tip: Room and bathroom were large overlooking St. Charles Avenue.
