“Good location, good value for what it is”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

Stayed here for one night with 3 friends at the tail end of my bachelorette party. The location is good - close enough to walk to the busy areas of the French Quarter, and the building itself is very pretty. We got off to a bad start because we arrived at 1:00 and were told that the room wouldn't be ready until 3, and we were not very impressed with the customer service and the way we were dealt with. The room itself was fine - the bathroom was cramped and the tub wasn't very clean, but it served its purpose. We did enjoy the hotel bar and the courtyard, and the beds were comfortable. Overall, the stay was fine, but no rave review here.

This is our fifth trip to the French Quarter and this was the best location we have stayed at. Being southeast of Bourbon Street put us on the quiet side of the celebration (even for Mardi Gras weekend) and just steps away from the sites of Decatur Street (the French Market, Cafe Du Monde, Central Grocery).

The hotel itself is charming and well-kept. Our room with two double beds was a nice size although the bathroom could use a little work. And while we were away from the noise of the festivities in the courtyard-like set-up, hallway noise was easy enough to hear in our room on the first floor.

Probably the best thing about the hotel was the staff. From the doorman to the desk staff, everyone was charming, helpful and warm.

While we were only there for two days this time, we may have finally decided to stop shopping around the next time we visit and head straight for the Hotel Provincial.

Room Tip: Maybe the second floor would be quieter?

We made a "last-minute" decision to take our family to Mardi Gras this year (by last-minute I mean early January!), and this was one of the few hotels that still had availability for 6 people. It ended up being perfect for our needs. The hotel is located on the quiet end of the French Quarter, very close to the French Market and a short walk to Jackson Square. It was a perfect location for a family with kids ages 11-20. Even on Mardi Gras day, when there is NO place in the French Quarter that is not completely insane, the courtyard was quiet and serene.

Our rooms were comfortable, although very simple, and more than adequate for our needs. We had one room with 2 double beds where I stayed with my 3 daughters, while the "boys" (my husband and 17-year old son) stayed in a king-bedded room. They weren't connecting (which would have been great), but were just one door away. The beds were nice, and we all slept well. The service was good, although not outstanding. It would have been helpful to get a general orientation to the services of the hotel, and to the surrounding area when we checked in (for instance, it took me a few days to figure out that they offered a complimentary continental breakfast each morning). Perhaps the service is more hands-on during a less busy time of year.

Some tips:
- While the beignets at Cafe du Monde are a must at least once during your trip, you can have wonderful pastries without a half-hour line around the corner from the hotel at Croissants d'Or (on Ursiline). It is outstanding! Good lunch options also.
- We had a great last-minute dinner at Louisiana Pizza Kitchen about 3 blocks away.
- If you are there for Mardi Gras, don't miss seeing Mardi Gras Indians at the Backstreet Cultural Museum. We got there around lunchtime and enjoyed some rice & beans and sodas, and Congo Nation showed up shortly afterwards. A truly awesome & authentic New Orleans experience.
- If you are going with kids you can avoid the worst of the Mardi Gras craziness by staying off Bourbon & Decatur. You will see a few topless women, and lots of drunk people, but a lot of what happens is very family friendly. We enjoyed Zulu at the edge of Louis Armstrong Park, and it was like a big family picnic!

The trip was lots of fun and the Provincial was a great place to enjoy it!

Room Tip: We were on the first floor by the courtyard pool, and it was perfect - quiet & convenient!

Do not waste your stay in the French Quarter on a Homogenized Hotel! Coming to the quarter and staying in a national branded hotel robs you of the opportunity to not only see, but to "live" the French Quarter. If you try to vacation here like you do at Disney, you are missing the whole point. Here you are visiting a living community where kids go to school and people live their lives.
There are two ways to experience the French Quarter: as a tourist and as a resident. I lived in the Hotel Provincial almost continuously for 3 years...they have the most amazing staff of real N'awlins people you will ever meet, very knowledgeable in the ways and means of the quarter.
Location is perfect, only a couple blocks from Crazy Bourbon Street, Toney Royal Street, Kitchy Decatur, Trendy Marigny, Shopping at the French Market, and everything else.
Rooms are cozy and well-appointed, probalby among the cleanest in the French Quarter. Linens are exceptionally clean and crisp, and the showers are hot and strong. The pools and gardens make for wonderful little places to reflect and plan. Of all the places I travel, including my own home on the worlds finest beach, it is Hotel Provincial that always finds its way into my dreams

I ended up switching from one of the more expensive places to this and loved every minute of it. Like in a lot of reviews the bathrooms aren't exactly the greatest but the location at this price is. It's a close walk to all the hot spots even if you've had a few too many! The staff was very helpful and parking was an added plus. I'd def stay here again.
