“Perfect Family getaway”

We have been going to Kona every year with our family since 2008 and we really enjoyed the Tradewinds. It is conveniently located near the beach, town and the Keahou shopping center. The house is large enough for people to have their own space, and has big enough common areas that we could all hang out together as well. It really is the perfect rental for larger groups and I would absolutely recommend it.

“Beautiful Hawaiian home”

We stayed at Tradewind's for my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. We had 15 people and we all fit comfortably. The grounds are so beautiful and lush and the pool area was amazing! The home is very well kept and clean. Lot's of space! The only quirk was that the two levels are not connected. In order to get to the upstairs you have to go outside. Not really a problem for us though. A 5 min walk to the beach, and very beautiful and peaceful. I would absolutely return to this beautiful home!

“Perfect Hawaiian getaway with large family or friends.”
Reviewed 1 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We came here on a family vacation with 6 adults and 4 kids, it was our best holiday ever. The kids are asking why we can't stay there forever. All the adults are wishing the same thing.
The house is comprised of an upper and lower apartment, each one has a large master with en suite bathroom and a twin room next to the master which made them perfect sleeping quarters for the parents and kids in our group. Then there was also a double room with a separate bathroom on each floor which were ideal for our extended family members/ friends of family, who wanted a little more privacy. We had loads of room.
We used the upstairs kitchen with it's large breakfast bar, dining area, and lounge as our communal chill out area. The upstairs, wrap around lanai has a large, good quality BBQ that was easy to use; a lovely, large outdoor dining area with a wetbar, and plenty of spots to sit and relax. We were there 10 days but we only ate out twice because the house was so awesome. And the kitchen was fully stocked with every appliance you would have in your own home, no need for rushing out for corkscrews and can openers!.
The downstairs kitchen, lounge, and cosy patios (really comfy daybed) were great when someone wanted a quiet place to read or enjoy doing nothing! There is a BBQ downstairs also, but since the one upstairs was so large, we never used the downstairs one.
Overall the house has a lux feel and look to it, but all the furniture is comfortable, and I really appreciated that the decor managed to be elegant whilst remaining suitable for family (I didn't have to run around putting away fragile ornaments and glass vases ☺).
The garden is large and very pretty, with a good sized pool that we all loved, and lots of seating/recliners for both sun-worshippers and shadeseekers. I think my favourite though was stargazing from the hot tub!
The house comes with pool and beach toys, and plenty of beach towels, a really nice touch that saved us from having to spend money on brand new water gear. They also provided hoses and an areas suitable for hosing off after the beach.
Tradewinds has an excellent location, walking distance from the nearest beach and a super short drive from a wonderful snorkelling spot in a naturally enclosed bay, where the kids felt safe, and were very excited to see turtles in the wild. It's a short drive from both Kona town center, which is a nice place to wander around for a few hours and has some family friendly places for a night out; and the local supermarket/pharmacy. Volcanos and waterfalls are only a couple of hours' drive away.
Lastly, we found all the house crew, from the owners Robin and John, to the housekeeping folks, the pool man and the gardeners, were all very friendly, extremely easy to get hold of, and happy to answer any queries we had. If we go back to Hawaii, we're definitely coming back here!

“Nice, we don't regret staying there, but we wouldn't stay there again.”

Firstly, Mahalo to John and Robin for assisting us with suggestions and information when planning our stay and for opening their home to us.
We were a group of 7 adults and 2 children. The house is spacious however if you are after communal accommodation this house won't provide that. The house is split into 2 levels and access is gained from the outside, there isn't an internal connecting staircase. Not what we were expecting but not the greatest of deals.
There is no air conditioning, again not what we were expecting but something we definitely were disappointed with and struggled with. It was pretty hot and stuffy even with all the windows and doors open. We arrived from a long flight from Australia and walked into a sauna. There was on average 2 fans in each room (no comment on the energy consumption,), the fans only helped in circulating hot dry air!
There are ample sitting areas on the lanai which wraps around the house. The pool temperature was perfect, lots of memorable moments in and around the pool. The spa was also a favorite.
The kitchen is well equipped, the tv needs upgrading, took a bit of fiddling around with to get it working.
There are 3 bedrooms upstairs, the master bedroom has an ensuite, the other two share a small bathroom. Downstairs there are 3 bedrooms, one which is accessed through the main bedroom downstairs. There are also 2 bathrooms downstairs, all showers have very weak water pressure.
There was inadequate lighting outside of the house, walking around the lanai when moving from one area to the other didn't have great visibility.
While I appreciate we were staying on a tropical island, the house is in dire need of pest control. We were forever swatting massive cockroaches that all love to fly! There were massive bull ants everywhere and creepy crawlers wherever we sat, whether on the sofa, carpet or lanai. We constantly had the creepy crawlies.
Not a terrible experience, I guess we were just expecting more. I'd recommend this house to those easier to please.

Management Response
4 Jul 2014
We very much appreciate your comments about our Kona home, and we would like to assure you that we have addressed the issues that you raise. As stated in our printed materials at Tradewinds, we encourage our guests to notify us immediately if anything is amiss so that we can promptly address all concerns.

As with many of the larger homes in Hawaii, we rely on natural ventilation. Almost every week out of the year, the fans we provide in all rooms provide enough air flow to keep our guests comfortable. Based on your concerns, we now ask arrival times of our guests during the warmest months so our housekeepers can have windows, doors, and fans set to accommodate a most pleasant temperature on arrival. This has greatly alleviated the temperature issues during the warmest weeks of the year.

In terms of the “creepy crawlers” to which you refer, because Kona is a tropical island there are geckos (house lizards) in Hawaii! It can be alarming to those unfamiliar with the Islands, but once you are used to them, these critters become as welcome as butterflies.

One last thing, with respect to the TVs, since your stay, we have replaced two of these with hi-definition flat screen models, so that all four TV’s in the home are now hi-def flat screens.

Again, Mahalo for your feedback and helpful comments!

John & Robin
