There is an actual marathon race to the top of this mountain every year on July 4th!
It is a 3 mile round trip!

This is a gorgeous mountain and the trail to go up is not so terribly hard! You can appreciate from below or adventure up. Really wonderful! They just had a nice competition that brings people from many places to run up the mountain and a local woman won the female competition! I love that!

The hike is pretty demanding in places, especially when you're trying to get down some of the steeper parts. We took the jeep trail, as opposed to the tougher and reportedly scarier race trail. Round trip was 5 or 6 miles and took us about 3 1/2 hours. The jeep trail starts off fairly broad and steep, then narrows to a singletrack and levels out for a bit. The level section had some snow and mud in mid-June (Father's Day), so we were glad we had waterproof boots. There's a steep section through some willows, and the bugs here got intense for a hundred yards or so. You emerge from the willows and keep climbing, although the slope is more gradual, then scramble up scree fields to the race summit. From the race summit the trail continues, but at that point it seemed too narrow, exposed, and windy for our liking. We turned around. The climb offers some breathtaking views of Resurrection Bay, which you'll start seeing well before you get to the top. We had a great time in Seward but much of what we did there was touristy. This hike felt like a locals' favorite. We enjoyed it!

Parking and hiking are free.

The trail head is off 2nd Street and Monroe along a residential lane. This is a connection of three trails to the top. The trail starts as a rocky and steep jeep trail the first .6 mile, but smooths out past the waterfall and becomes a singletrack at the Benchtrail to the saddle and a steeper summit trail.

There was still plenty of snow and snow tunnels along the Bench trail. My dogs began to act nervous as I neared the saddle. The thick cover of krumholz prevented me from seeing anything, so I heeded the dogs' warnings and went back down. Got to see Resurrection bay, but the flies here were a nuisance. The dogs enjoyed all the shade and water.

We wanted to climb this mountain but it was still pretty wet with ice and snow at the top. So we went to Exit Glacier instead. Need to be in good shape to hike this mountain
