Hiking the race route the day after the race was pretty exciting! Such a fun climb and amazing views of the city at the top.

Very cool place to look around. Especially when the runners are ther for the race. Look up on the mountain and see the trail they run on.

Best part of cursing it when you get to take in all the beautiful scenery along the way. Our view of Mt. Marathon was everything we dreamed it would be. We would love to return and hike around it someday.

Every July 4 hundreds of men, women and youths race up and down Mt. Marathon. Why? Because it's there. Perhaps 50 or 60 years ago I might have managed a run up and down this mountain, but now at an advanced age the best way for me to participate in the race is by watching it from the streets at the base of the mountain. It is even possible to watch the race on local TV, where camera coverage by drones can show runners' slips, stumbles and grimaces--and their triumphant smiles as they cross the finish line.

In case you get hungry watching all the runners burning up so many calories, there are lots of restaurants, food trucks and food stands where you can grab a bite. The race is run in groups (youths, women, men), so if you want to watch the entire event it takes place over a period of about 4-5 hours. Starting times are posted so if you can choose which group or groups you want to watch.

If you are in or near Seward on July 4, don't miss the Mt. Marathon races.

There is an actual marathon race to the top of this mountain every year on July 4th!
It is a 3 mile round trip!
