We chose Castel Petroso on our first visit to Montefalco because of the menu and the shaded outside tables. Unfortunately, another couple was ahead of us for the last outside table and we were seated inside but close to the door. We had stopped here for a light lunch and decided to share the beef Carpaccio. The dish was light, refreshing and delicious. The beef was cut perfectly, paper-thin. The portion, for us, was perfect for splitting. We then decided to try the pear in Sangrantino wine as it seemed a local specialty and several of the menu items featured Sangrantino. The pear was also delicious, although the sauce was perhaps a bit too sweet. We thoroughly enjoyed both dishes. We wished we could return but we were staying in Spello. However, our last day in Spello it was raining – the kind of rain and fog that looked like it would last all day. We could see Montefalco from our garden and the sun was shinning there, so after a few errands, we headed back so we could have lunch at Castel Petroso again. Although our intentions were to try something different, the carpaccio had been so good we decided to once again share it. On both occasions, the restaurant filled up at lunchtime with a mix of tourists but mostly Italians, some local, some visiting. Everyone seemed very pleased with their food. Castel Petroso is a family-run restaurant specializing in local Umbrian food. The restaurant, on what seems to be the main pedestrian street in the historic center of Montefalco, is not as small as it first appears as they have several rooms in the back. The friendliness and attention shown to us by Giordano and Vissia on both occasions made our experience more enjoyable. On our second visit, they both remembered us, which is a nice feeling when you are travelingl. In our six-week vacation in Italy, these were two of our best lunches. If you are in Montefalco, be sure to try Castel Petroso! This is extremely good food at a very reasonable price. Buon appetito!

This restaurant is located along the pedestrian street that from the main medieval city's gate (Porta S. Agostino) gives access to the center of this picturesque Umbrian town (but least known of other like Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Orvieto, etc.). The restaurant is tastefully furnished, and gives a pleasant impression of intimacy.
But what is more important is the food. Although we are in a region (Umbria) where it isn't easy to eat badly, the restaurant is distinguished by the care with which the dishes are prepared. We realized that this is a family business, and that in particular mom works in the kitchen.
We can tell of course of what we tried: as a first course of "strangozzi" (sort of thick spaghetti, typical of Umbria) with black truffles (also typical of Umbria: the white ones here are almost unknown). We both chose this excellent dish. We then requested two starters, but using them as a main course: scrambled eggs (with truffles as well); and mix of Umbrian cheeses, garnished with a delicious grape jam. All accompanied by a glass of fine "Sagrantino", a Montefalco renowned wine. Overall, you could not wish for better food.
The bill was fair; the service, very friendly, could have been even more welcome, if it had been a bit faster.

The restaurant is situated just inside the walls of Montefalco, on a hill leading to the main center. It was recommended to us by the vineyard we visited. We had the cheese plate, which was amazing, and gnocchi made with the local wine. Both were delicious. The cheese plate itself was quite substantial and delicious.
