We chose Castel Petroso on our first visit to Montefalco because of the menu and the shaded outside tables. Unfortunately, another couple was ahead of us for the last outside table and we were seated inside but close to the door. We had stopped here for a light lunch and decided to share the beef Carpaccio. The dish was light, refreshing and delicious. The beef was cut perfectly, paper-thin. The portion, for us, was perfect for splitting. We then decided to try the pear in Sangrantino wine as it seemed a local specialty and several of the menu items featured Sangrantino. The pear was also delicious, although the sauce was perhaps a bit too sweet. We thoroughly enjoyed both dishes. We wished we could return but we were staying in Spello. However, our last day in Spello it was raining – the kind of rain and fog that looked like it would last all day. We could see Montefalco from our garden and the sun was shinning there, so after a few errands, we headed back so we could have lunch at Castel Petroso again. Although our intentions were to try something different, the carpaccio had been so good we decided to once again share it. On both occasions, the restaurant filled up at lunchtime with a mix of tourists but mostly Italians, some local, some visiting. Everyone seemed very pleased with their food. Castel Petroso is a family-run restaurant specializing in local Umbrian food. The restaurant, on what seems to be the main pedestrian street in the historic center of Montefalco, is not as small as it first appears as they have several rooms in the back. The friendliness and attention shown to us by Giordano and Vissia on both occasions made our experience more enjoyable. On our second visit, they both remembered us, which is a nice feeling when you are travelingl. In our six-week vacation in Italy, these were two of our best lunches. If you are in Montefalco, be sure to try Castel Petroso! This is extremely good food at a very reasonable price. Buon appetito!
