After a long delayed trip from England we went 'off piste' from our usual restaurants in the Montefalco area. We had eaten here several years ago with some critical restaurant owners.
Today was just perfect - a warm welcome from a biting wind into a cosy room. Everyone was glowing with their lunch and red wine and we need to get into that space. We were tired.
We ordered wine of the house and were treated with the very well respected Tabarrini Cantina's IGT. What a super match for a platter of local meats and cheese. This was promptly followed by bowls of steaming strangozzi ( the traditional local Umbrian pasta, like coarse textured tagliatelle) with Tartuffo. We were aglow and fully satisfied. What a treat to be well looked after by friendly staff and to eat satisfying food that was so delicious. Beats the wind and mellows with the sun.

It was a wonderful Autumn day in Montefalco- bright blue sky, fluffy white clouds, a fresh breeze and the streets were empty.
It was also a wonderful lunch at Castel Petroso. Our welcome was so warm, the food- cooked by our two hosts' mum- was delicious, freshly prepared using local, seasonal produce and gluten free pasta provided for one of our party within the blink of an eye.
Our host recommended a bottle of Montefalco wine, naturally, and it, too, was superb.
It was a great meal in a delightful setting provided by lovely people- as I say, a real gem.

After wating for 15 minutes the waiter told us that they could not serve us. It was the wine festival of the city and they couldn't handle To serve four tables. Not professional at all. They should close the doors as they can' t operate their business. Is It a business?

When visiting Montefalco with lunch time over, we just dropped to any restaurant on the way up to the main square. We have been surprised by the friendly welcome and the quality of the dishes we ordered. Even the simple salads and cold cut dishes where of highest quality. And have tasted the best ever buffalo mozzarella. We got new energy to visit this beautiful town, and a good reason to go back there.

We chose Castel Petroso on our first visit to Montefalco because of the menu and the shaded outside tables. Unfortunately, another couple was ahead of us for the last outside table and we were seated inside but close to the door. We had stopped here for a light lunch and decided to share the beef Carpaccio. The dish was light, refreshing and delicious. The beef was cut perfectly, paper-thin. The portion, for us, was perfect for splitting. We then decided to try the pear in Sangrantino wine as it seemed a local specialty and several of the menu items featured Sangrantino. The pear was also delicious, although the sauce was perhaps a bit too sweet. We thoroughly enjoyed both dishes. We wished we could return but we were staying in Spello. However, our last day in Spello it was raining – the kind of rain and fog that looked like it would last all day. We could see Montefalco from our garden and the sun was shinning there, so after a few errands, we headed back so we could have lunch at Castel Petroso again. Although our intentions were to try something different, the carpaccio had been so good we decided to once again share it. On both occasions, the restaurant filled up at lunchtime with a mix of tourists but mostly Italians, some local, some visiting. Everyone seemed very pleased with their food. Castel Petroso is a family-run restaurant specializing in local Umbrian food. The restaurant, on what seems to be the main pedestrian street in the historic center of Montefalco, is not as small as it first appears as they have several rooms in the back. The friendliness and attention shown to us by Giordano and Vissia on both occasions made our experience more enjoyable. On our second visit, they both remembered us, which is a nice feeling when you are travelingl. In our six-week vacation in Italy, these were two of our best lunches. If you are in Montefalco, be sure to try Castel Petroso! This is extremely good food at a very reasonable price. Buon appetito!
